“Ha!” I shouted as my wooden sword crashed against Paul’s. We pushed our blade against one another, fighting for an edge.
Zenith, Lilia, Rudy, and Sylphy all watched us from the stairs as we struggled for an edge in the fight.
Eventually I felt my strength fading, and knew I would be overwhelmed by Paul’s power unless I gained some distance, so I jumped backward and extended my blade.
I dropped my stance, and let my body become loose and fluid, switching my fighting style from Sword God to Water God.
Water God acted more as a defensive style rather than an offensive one, and it’s exactly the style I needed to use if I wished to succeed today.
Paul grinned at my stance and launched himself forward, throwing a flurry of strikes my way which I blocked as quickly as they came.
I didn’t look for an opening, I didn’t try to jump away.
I let my body lead me, my eyes that would track Paul’s swings, my arms that would move my sword to block them. My legs that were loaded and ready to counter, all of them slowly started to become one big blur.
One working body.
“Hnngh!” I shouted and parried Paul’s strike, catching him off guard. The man was knocked off of his balance, and my loaded legs pushed forward. “Grah!” I roared as my wooden blade impacted Paul's ribs!
He was launched back and fell down onto his back, while I stood there, looking at my hands.
The world… felt different, and I definitely wasn’t that strong before.
Could this… be my Battle Aura?!
I took slow breaths as I looked around. I spotted Zenith running over to my downed Father—only… it didn’t even look like she was running.
Her movements were slow, and so were the reactions of the others.
This.. is pretty trippy.
But also incredibly badass!
“Paul!” Zenith shouted in worry which took me out of my own little world.
Just as quickly as the feeling came, it went away and I was normal again.
“Argh.” Paul grunted in pain and brought a hand up to his rib. Zenith dropped beside him slowly, her pregnant stomach hindering her free range of motion. “I’m fine Zenith.”
“No you’re not, it sounded like something broke!” Mother shut him up quickly as she put her hand on his side.
“I’ll do it, mother.” I frowned and walked forward, dropping beside them. She gave me a look that told me she didn’t know if that was a good idea, but I smiled sadly at her.
This was my fault, I should be the one to fix it.
She nodded and let me, and I placed my hand on his side and began to heal his rib. I could practically feel the damage I caused through my magic, and was certain I broke a couple of his ribs.
Fixing the problem wasn’t hard at all and barely took any magic.
I let out a breath and stood up when I was finished. “I’m sorry, Father.” I lowered my head, and Paul just grinned at me and pushed himself back to his feet.
“Sorry about what?!” Paul grabbed my head and began running his hand through my hair roughly. “You awakened your Battle Aura!”
The man pulled me into a tight hug which I hesitantly returned, a small hidden smile dancing on my lips.
I had spent so long working toward it and now I finally nailed it!
“Congrats to you.” Rudy clapped his hands once and smirked, and I took the praise openly.
Rudeus hadn’t trained in the sword as much as me, but even as long as he did, it was clear that he would never unlock his Battle Aura.
While I could sometimes rely on my body to make the right choices, Rudeus wouldn’t do so for a second. He always made sure to think every little thing through, so turning off his mind was an impossibility. It was like asking a fish to stop swimming. It just wasn’t gonna happen.
One Paul was forced to acknowledge.
“You were amazing!” Sylphy offered me a kind smile.
“Thanks, I’m glad I figured it out.” I placed my hands on my hips.
“Your first attempt at using Battle Aura was quite impressive, Master Law.” Lilia offered me a warm smile, which made me blush a bit.
Lilia being nice to us was something I still needed to get used to. My eyes trailed down to her large stomach and a breath escaped me.
Soon, only a few more months and our little siblings would be here.
“What are the odds you tap into your Battle Aura on your big day?!” Paul wrapped his arm around my shoulders and walked me toward the house. “It’s time to celebrate!”
A big day… that sounds about right. Today was my fifth birthday, which means another feast!
It feels like more than five years have passed since I was reincarnated in this world. Time has been moving really slow!
I came in and was immediately ushered to the bath by Zenith, who had cheered up a great deal since Paul had been healed.
I didn’t put up a fight and made my way into our bathroom with Rudeus who also hadn’t taken a bath yet.
“Congrats on living to five.” Rudeus said jokingly as we stripped.
“Thanks, honestly each year is an accomplishment at this point.” I joked. I could express just how much better this life was than my last one.
It was infinitely better.
“You can say that again.” Rudeus grinned as he made a water ball and threw it in my face. He gave me a challenging look, and I considered returning fire but decided against it. “What’s wrong?”
“Well, I wanted to throw one back at you, but I knew you’d throw another, and thus we’d devolve into two kids throwing water at each other while our tiny dicks are swinging about.”
“Hey… mine is not tiny.” Rudeus covered his something-calibur with his hands.
“Rudy… you’re five.”
“So are you!” He pointed at me with an accusatory look.
“… Yeah, and I admit I have a micro penis. What the hell are we arguing about?” Though mine was bigger than his, and I wouldn’t accept anyone saying otherwise.
“I dunno honestly, but hey, even if it’s small, I know I got balls of steel!”
“I’m glad you do, just keep those aforementioned balls away from me.” I waved my hand and hopped into the tub, and he jumped in after me.
Both of us relaxed in the warm water. It felt really good, especially after a long day of training.
“Hey, Law?” Rudeus spoke quietly.
“Hm?”
“I’m happy it was you.” Rudeus said before averting his gaze.
I stared at him with a raised brow. That could mean a lot of things.
“What do you mean?”
“{… You were reincarnated here, I’m happy that it was you and not someone else.}” He explained in Japanese and I nodded in understanding.
“I’m happy it was you too man.” I pat his shoulder. “Just keep Sylphy off your radar and we’ll be good.”
“I won’t do anything to her!” Rudy held up his hands and shook his head before a small smile began to twitch at his lips. “Yet.”
“Burn in hell.” I scrunched my nose as he laughed, and pretty soon I was laughing too.
He was joking… right?
Right!?
Eventually we left the bath after getting clothed. Everyone was already sitting at the table, even Lilia, who usually just waited until we finished eating before enjoying her meal.
That had completely changed once Zenith had gotten over Paul’s unfaithfulness. She had learned of Lilia’s sexual frustration, and also acknowledged that Lilia’s child deserved a father.
So, Zenith went against her religion, and decided to allow Paul to marry Lilia.
It was a surprise to all of us, but a welcome one.
Lilia was now technically our step-mother and Paul’s second wife. And as Paul’s second wife, she was now so much more than just a simple maid. She still did her duties, but she was expected to eat with us and talk to us without reservation, of course we couldn’t get her to stop addressing us as Lord/Lady and Master.
I guess those titles just came with the Lilia package.
The red-haired pregnant woman was sitting next to our blonde-haired equally pregnant mother.
“Rudy, Law, you’re here!” Zenith smiled brightly at our appearance.
“Yup.” I grinned and moved to sit beside Sylphy, while Rudy sat in his seat beside me and Paul.
“Good, we can finally give our presents!” Zenith clapped excitedly and shot up. “Lilia and I will go first!”
Mother moved away and pulled out a book and brought it over to my side of the table. She placed it in front of me and as I read the title, my heart rate sped up.
It was a book on healing magic!
“Mother… how?!” I turned to her and got a big smile from the woman.
“I sent a letter to my sister a little while after you used chantless healing magic for the first time. I thought you would like to further your expertise in healing magic.” She clasped her hands together and I immediately jumped up and hugged her.
“Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted!” I spoke into her shirt.
“Ooh, I’m happy you enjoy it, my baby boy!” She pulled away and planted a kiss on my forehead, making me blush with a small, content smile. “The book offers spells up to the Advanced Level. Anything more than that is prohibited by the church.”
Ah, so the Millis church really doesn’t allow people to learn healing magic beyond Advanced level.
That’s stupid, and unnecessarily cruel.
How can they call themselves godly people yet hog all the healing?
Hypocrites.
“I appreciate this all the same, Mother! Advanced healing magic should be really helpful!”
“Yes it should!” Zenith giggled and stood up as she noticed Paul was beginning to pace back and forth.
The guy was excited!
“It’s my turn!” Paul grinned and walked over to his gift that was placed within a box.
My heart sped up as I looked at the box.
Paul picked it up and brought it over to me and with a gentle smile, offered it.
“Happy birthday, Law.”
I looked down at the box and placed it on the ground so I could open it.
I pulled off the top and my eyes sparkled as I was met with the very thing I had even hoped to get!
A sword, my very own blade!
“Thank you!” I crashed into Paul, and even though he had just broken a couple ribs, he didn’t even mutter a word of protest, I guess I’m really good at healing people!
“Of course, son.” Paul placed a hand on my shoulder and cleared his throat. “A blade to a swordsman is an extension of his arm. You have grown enough in the sword to have those words apply to you. Take this blade and use it well. Use it to protect yourself and when the day comes, protect your own family.”
I held the blade with two hands and slowly unsheathed it to inspect the fine metal.
The shine of the blade allowed me to see my own reflection. Awe-filled eyes looked back at me as a wide grin consumed the bottom half of my face.
“I’ll live by your words, Father.” I promised, which actually caught him off guard.
Paul often spoke just to hear his own voice, or tried to be helpful just to say a whole lot of nothing.
But today, he gave good advice, and I would follow it through.
“Ha!” Paul laughed and ran his hand through my hair. “That’s my boy!”
“I’ll go next!” Sylphy offered and stood up. She reached into her back pocket and pulled out three blue rocks. “I found these and they looked really pretty, so I picked them up.” Sylphy handed me one, then moved over to Rudy and gave him one. “So let’s all match!”
I smiled at the green-haired girl. She seemed genuinely excited about giving me this gift, so I would treasure it near and dear to my heart.
“Thank you, Sylphy. I’ll keep this safe until the end of my days.” I promised her, and her face lit up with happiness.
“Same goes for me, I’ll be buried with this rock.” Rudy inspected it with interest. “And better yet…” He reached into his pocket and pulled out the locket Sylphy gifted him on his fifth birthday and opened it. He placed the rock in the middle and closed it, and it just barely fit. The locket closed without any effort. “I think it was meant to be!”
“Mmm!” Sylphy smiled brightly, and both Rudy and I were lost in that smile.
No matter how either of us felt in the past, and any differences we would have in the future, we could both agree on one thing—Sylphy must be protected.
“I will go next, if that is fine with you, Master Rudeus?” Lilia asked and Rudeus shrugged. I turned to the red-haired woman as she fiddled with a small box.
She offered it to me and I took it and opened it, my eyes blinked at the sight of a necklace with a purple gem.
Is this an amethyst gem?
“Lilia…” I breathed out. This necklace looks incredibly expensive.
“That necklace was given to me when I was a young girl and I wore it for many years. I stopped around the time I first entered my service as a maid during my time in the Asura capital, and haven’t worn it since. I have no more need for it, and would like you to have it, Master Law.”
“… Lilia-” I shook my head, “I can’t take this!”
“I wish for you to have it, Master. It has warmed my heart for years, and it would warm my heart for many more to know that you have it around your neck.”
I looked into the woman’s deep purple eyes and drank in the warmth of her smile.
Father got lucky with her, how the hell did he land both Lilia and Mother?!
“Thank you, Lilia.” I lowered my head to her. I flinched at the feeling of her hand on my chin and she tilted my head up so I was looking up at her.
“I have a request, Master Law.”
“Anything, Lilia.” I placed my hand on my heart, and her smile grew a bit.
“Please never lower your head to me, I am forever indebted to you and Master Rudeus.”
I paused and glanced at Rudeus who seemed just as surprised as me.
I turned my attention back to our step-mother and nodded.
“I understand, thank you.”
A calm, meaningful silence descended over the room as Lilia took a step back and bowed slightly.
“I guess I’m last.” Rudeus grinned. “I’ll be right back!”
My older brother ran away and up the stairs, and all of us waited with silent anticipation.
When he came back down, he was holding something behind his back.
“Law…” Rudeus averted his eyes to the ground. A soft, almost unnoticeable hue of pink dusted his cheeks as he fiddled with whatever he was holding. “Happy birthday.”
He then presented his gift for me to the room, and all our eyes widened at the sight.
It was… a miniature Roxy statue, and it looks like it was made completely of stone.
It looked a lot like the collectible figures of anime girls that would go for exorbitant prices back in our old world.
“Rudy…” I whispered as he handed me the figure.
“I know how much you miss Roxy… I do too, but I have the picture you gave me to always keep her in my mind, I thought you deserved something too.” Rudeus explained as he scratched his cheek.
My eyes were lost in the beauty of the Roxy figure. It looked exactly like her, carved to perfection. From her face to her proportions.
I stepped forward and hugged the older boy tightly. The feeling of emptiness that had affected me since Roxy’s departure seemed to lessen, and it wasn’t because of this figure.
“Thank you, Rudy.”
“You’ve done more for me than you’ll ever know, Law, this is the least I could do.” Rudeus assured me and patted my back.
There was no greater remedy than a loving family.
