Governments ceased functioning and everything is controlled by Megacorporations. The environment is completely ruined the sun barely manages to break through the black smog obscuring the sky and you can't go out without a gas mask or special artificial lungs because the air is so toxic it would slowly kill you. Also all rain is acid rain. The average person is lucky if they get a elementary school education (like Momonga), it's common to work alongside children as corporate slaves and it was a normal thing to walk past corpses on the side walk. Momonga was one of those corporate slaves.
