His bargain with Madara to join the Akaksuki in exchange for them not attacking Konoha was null and void upon his death, and every plan he put in place to kill Madara and keep Sasuke from being corrupted didn't go as he hoped. What keeps Itachi from "being" a failure is that in the end he acknowledged his mistakes and trusted others to do what he could not.
