Ben mentions in NOTLD he was listening to a radio in a truck in a diner parking lot when a truck crashed into the gas pumps. Plus that helicopter flying over is a reference to the helicopter they flew in the original DOTD. At 30:20 they hired a real nurse to do the arm stitching scene. She went too deep and actually stitched the prosthetic to Ving's arm, he didn't say anything until the scene was done shooting. The director thought the blood effects looked great (he didn't know she had really sewed him up)😮 At 1:36:55 I think that zombie that CJ shoots looks like Bub from DOTD. There's a store in the mall called Gaylen Ross (the actress from the original DOTD) The coffee shop is called Hallowed Grounds because Starbucks didn't want to be in the movie. There was a sporting goods store in the mall. Why they didn't wear protective gear such as hockey gloves from there to avoid bites is beyond me.

The cover of Disturbed's "Get Down with the Sickness" is by Richard Cheese, a band that parodies pop songs in a 50's "lounge" style. Also the lead, Sarah Polley, got her start as a child (and did an amazing job) in "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" - an amazing Terry Gilliam film (Brazil, Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - all worth checking out).
