They're Not Who They Say They Are - Twin Peaks S2EP7 FIRST WATCH

Wow, never noticed before that Harold's suicide note is the same thing that the Grandson says a couple episodes back... J'ai un homme solitaire" (which is funny cuz if you know French it's not grammatically correct lol)

The painting that Leland smashes Maddie's head into to kill her is a painting of ("you're going back to") Missoula, Montana.

I've never heard about this episode being edited after the first airing and can't find any information about it. Do you have any source for this?

Shadoe Price

it must have been so hard!

This episode is so brutal. Poor Sheryl Lee had to film her murder with three different men. She filmed it with Bob and Leland but also with Ben Horne so that nobody could leak the episode ending. I can’t imagine how hard of a day of filming that was.

This is my favorite episode of television ever with an episode from season 3 coming in a close second. In fact, they both have great songs in them, but in this case, we've got "The World Spins" which is also my favorite Julee Cruise song (and like Harold, Julee took her own life so it's especially sad).

Honestly I felt embarrassed when I first suggested it so it's a losing battle 😂

Alexandra Wells

wow, I love that they also filmed it with Ben!

I did not get it the it first time i saw Twin Peaks, that it was Catherine who was the Japanese man. And in hindsight i'm a bit embarrassed for it, but there you go. That old familiar feeling of embarrassment, i have grown acoustement to it and now i relish it.

This is also the light version of the episode that aired. The network made Lynch edit it to be a bit of a softer murder on the reshowing and that is the one used ever since. With you asking if she (Julie Cruise) was about to sing the theme tune she actually does as there is a vocal version that was a hit here in the UK. Here's a great little video of how Lynch and composer Angelo Badalaenti composed the theme tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-eqgr_gn4k

Twin Peaks is far from a perfect show but the ending to this episode is one of the reasons why it's still my favorite, I loved watching your reaction to it

One of the most impactful episodes on TV ever! Thank you for these videos! It's so lovely to be back in the world of Twin Peaks and to see it through fresh eyes like yours. I love your commentary and your reactions in each episode ❤️! I found out recently that the revealing scene was actually shot three times – once with Leland, once with Bob and once with Ben Horne. They wanted to keep it a secret from the crew until the very last moment, so very few people knew. Even Ray Wise, the actor who plays Leland, didn't know before the shooting of this episode. There is a video of him telling the story, but it contains some spoilers so I'll send it to you after you progress more with the episodes (edit: here is the link for whoever is curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYC9Y84ogc0 (spoilers warning)). It's definitely worth it going back and watching the show from the beginning knowing this reveal now. There are so many subtle clues spread throughout the episodes, but also always something to distract you from them so that few people connect the dots. My favourite ones are where Leland dances and sings :)). Just like the dwarf who you saw dancing in the red room ("Where we're from... there's always music in the air!"). Also Leland's hair turns white just like Bob's. And maybe the biggest clue was that Leland knew Bob since he was a little boy. The song that Julee sings at the Roadhouse at the end is called The World Spins and is my favourite by her and Angelo (the composer). The Lyrics are by David. You can hear it in full here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA4heQsi5yQ . It carries such an eerie and calm atmosphere and somehow just lets the emotions out of people 😊.

and here we have it! a masterclass in t.v. from the man himself, Mr. David Lynch! can you imagine this episode on the friendly ABC channel back in the day? just crazy! I too didn't see it coming! don't remember about Catherine though. the music cue, again, perfection! love the fact that Cooper turns before Harry to see Margaret asking her if something was happening. they are on the same vibe. I really think she sees the Giant looking at her expressions next to Coop. they, Coop, Bobby, Donna and Margaret all feel something in the Roadhouse. (The Bang Bang Bar yes but never called that!😉) the face of Bob on Leland's body as he laughs with the fading reverb/echo still haunts me to this day! the sound of the vinyl being at the end of the last track of the album and just slowly jumping creates a clicking sound that for years I could not identifie as such till recent viewings and that sound, to me, resembles a very very slow horse just trotting in the living room. death is upon us! what a reveal! what an episode! classic! iconic! epic! thank you for this rewatch! it never gets old! awesome reactions as always and keep having fun!

Donna crying and Bobby at the bar, it made everything more painful. This episode is going to stick with me

Man, what an episode. This is peak Twin Peaks. I watched this when it aired, and it was just harrowing. None of us were ready for what happened… We had never seen anything like it on television before. That whole Roadhouse scene is a masterpiece. When Donna starts crying.. on a deep level they all know that something is wrong… All set to the ethereal soundtrack of Julee Cruise. David Lynch was such a master at creating moods.

Wednesday’s are the best days!!! The episode we’ve all been waiting for! Can’t wait

Bang/bang is just a sign; there’s only one bar: the roadhouse

Also, by now it’s clear the supernatural is involved a things aren’t metaphorical, though that concept is discussed down the line.

Everyone connected to Laura & Maddy felt an overwhelming, inexplicable sense of dread. Also ,LL also saw the giant. You can see her arms moving while everyone else besides coop is catatonic. This episode also redefined acceptable degrees of violence on commercial television. Lynch never wanted to do this episode, he never wanted to reveal the killer, but the network (ABC) forced the issue
