It seems common in movies that they never want to "ruin" the pretty face, even if it's unrealistic

Horrific accident and not a scratch on her face…lol. Yeah, she wore a helmet, but they aren’t that perfect.

wow I completely overlooked that, I do think that is interesting commentary in a lot of zombie/outbreak movies. We see how careless the government can be when "handling" the situation. It's like in Dawn of the Dead where officials say cut off the head and burn the body like it's no big deal meanwhile you're talking about your loved ones.

I was watching this again and that end scene really hits hard. It shows how the government looks at its citizens as garbage to be disposed of. They don't even try to ID her body so next of kin can be notified and she can get a proper burial. So disrespectful to the deceased and the family that will never know what became of her.

Every rose has it's thorn. Poor girl's just happens to be in her armpit. There's a nod to Cronenberg's original choice for Rose in the film when she walks by a poster for Carrie. He was a fan of her's after watching the terrific Badlands (based on the Starkweather/Fugate killings), but producer John Dunning disliked her Texan accent and freckles. She instead went on to make my personal favorite film that she's appeared in, 3 Women. As a fan of Rabid since the video store days, it's hard to imagine anyone but Chambers in the part.
Cronenberg told her to underplay everything, which I think works for a woman experiencing rebirth as a predator. The instinct, the hunger superceding empathy. Her predicament reminds me of Mary, Mary Bloody Mary, though the woman in that film was cursed from birth. Marilyn auditioned for the role that ultimately went to Season Hubley in Paul Schrader's Hardcore. Apparently, they didn't find Chambers convincing as a porno star, which makes me question what planet they were on.
I love seeing your reaction to the cow scene. I adore those animals, and this world could certainly stand to do with more compassion for them. It's my head canon that, since she could only eat human blood, the cow didn't contract the virus.
Shivers is even lower budget and has a similar premise of infection, though it's of quite a different variety. It's my favorite of his 70s work, even with a horrible character (you'll know him when you see him), because it throws in some dark humor along with his usual clinical approach. At one point, Lynn Lowry recounts a dream she had, and it's glorious. That said, my favorite Cronenberg is Videodrome. A close second would be Crash, which was controversial of it's time to the point that Ted Turner of all people spoke out against it. Cronenberg is a pinnacle director for me, though. Top three. He's about as close to can't miss as David Lynch. eXistenZ is one of his best films that I don't think gets enough credit. I mean, The Fly deserves it's kudos, but some people act like it's the only thing he ever did worth mentioning.
By the way, two random phobias, rabies and brain eating amoeba. No, you're not very likely to get either, but anxiety isn't always rational. My mother saw Cujo at the theater when she was pregnant with me. Probably why I'm a horror fan and where the phobia started too. 😆

You remember the scene on the subway car when the lady attacks the man. I just found out she was the Dr. in the operating room that got attacked when the lead Dr. went rabid and cut her finger with scissors and attacked everyone. And the guy she bit on the subway is the same guy that went rabid in the mall and got shot along with Santa.

Not strictly a horror but OUTBREAK (1995) is a really cool virus movie

it was so good! I liked the rabies variant take and how they had limited time to be rabid. It was a great scenario to play out!

I like this movie because before I saw this movie (fw just a couple of months ago) I always thought a human rabies variant was the most realistic scenario for a zombie apocalypse. There's tons of social commentary in this. And that guy nailed it during that last phone call with Rose. I'm not one to get emotional during movies but I put myself in his place and I could totally feel his pain.

Marilyn Chambers (the star) had some notoriety. She had been hired and had her picture on the Ivory Snow detergent boxes BUT right when they were going to market she starred in an X rated adult movie. This caused quite a stir, and of course lots of comments/jokes because Ivory Snow was pure and she was in a dirty movie. I watched an old CBC clip on YouTube and David Cronenberg explained that he had a very low budget for this movie so he couldn't hire a big star but Marilyn had a recognizable name and was willing to work for less because she wanted to go mainstream. He said her audition was good so he hired her as it was a mutually beneficial transaction for both sides.
