I mean if i was an inquisitor and theres this heretic that we release who we know worked with another guy, and that another guy have a son who spent some time with the released heretic right before the second offense of said heretic and he even gave something to the kid.... i would definitely suspect both, the father AND the kid. So basically Potocki was both scared for his own life and for leaving young Rafal orphan and with powerful enemies. In that case his reasoning is that Rafal will get some torture then quickly repent and go back to the "straight path". And yes, i know thats stupid reasoning but it fits
