The bank uses the "real" 10€ to make dealings, like lending money then getting back the interest as benefit. But that means that suddenly you have a "fake" 10€ in hand, but your "real" 10€ aren't in the bank anymore, they're back in circulation. You, of course, don't suspect anything is wrong and just use your 10€ bill with the same value that it would have if it was real gold. But that is all sustained sorely on the public's trust in the bank and the system. People trust that whenever they desire to take out their "real" 10€, they just have to give back the bill of "fake" money to the bank and retrieve it. If suddenly a bunch of actual counterfeit bills went into circulation, and people lost their trust in the system, in their "fake" money, they would RUSH to get back their "real" money, their gold, but the bank wouldn't have enough for everyone because they have already put it back in circulation. So they would go broke and it would become a big problem for everyone involved –except the people that made the counterfeits, they just have to worry about being caught–.
