The clown was on the Seer Pathway, but was not a Seer. That's the title of the Sequence 9 potion. The Sequence 8 title is Clown. While dressed like a clown, he was actually Sequence 7, which has some other title besides Seer and Clown (not revealed in the show, but presumably revealed by now in the source material, which I haven't read). That's why the clown said he used to be a Seer, and revealed the name of the Sequence 8 potion in his attempt to bribe Klein into giving him the notebook.

The remnants of the psyche that can cause a backlash to reside within that castle. Our goal is to get rid of it and become the true master of the castle. There are two ways we can do that. The first is to forcefully invade the castle. There is no guarantee that this will work, and you will most definitely injure yourself unless you can suppress it with absolute power. But of course, we are not equipped to do that. The second way is to get the owner of the castle to extend an invitation. This invitation can allow us to slide through the scrutiny of the guards and infiltrate the castle. We can then easily finish off the enemies. But the problem lies in the fact that this invitation specifies the facial features and characteristics of the guest. Thus, we have to disguise ourselves and act as a guest."

Most of the time whenever we see Anime characters cry they have a very loud and strong emotional moment. In LoM though we get a solemn scene with whispering and sniffling. We also hear Dunn breathing out his sadness which is very fitting and a really good way to show him handling the situation in a way befitting his leading position.

That in itself give more info to the acting method which some might get confused about it as well.

Posting my findings: He failed to digest his potion because: • He didn’t act his role properly. The acting method is the only safe way to digest potions. Neil was more of a ritual performer than a disciplined “occult researcher.” He liked dabbling in rites and summoning, but he didn’t embody the careful, knowledge-seeking mindset of a true Mystery Pryer. • He relied too heavily on rituals and mysticism. Mystery Pryers are meant to study and cautiously pry into the unknown, not recklessly perform dangerous ceremonies (ep 2 , he did an explosion in his lab). Neil preferred ritualistic operations and didn’t build the knowledge-focused persona needed to stabilize the potion. • He was an older Beyonder. With age his spirituality weakened, and his willpower was not strong enough to bear the burden of a potion that demanded constant disciplined acting and study. That made it harder to resist corruption. • He dragged out digestion for too long. Without proper “acting,” the potion remains unsettled. Neil lingered at Sequence 9 for years, never truly digesting, so the hidden dangers accumulated until he lost control.
