Just A Kiss

This is actually a moment from a WhiteRose fake dating fic I've been working on, and I thought it might be a neat lil bonus to give you guys a snippet of that chapter to go along with the illustration. So yeah, if that sounds interesting to you, feel free to read on below! Otherwise, just enjoy the art lol

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They walked in silence across the lot, Ruby finishing the last of her cotton candy before wadding the bag up into her pocket. Stopping in front of the entrance, Weiss sat her purse down next to the door, then turned to her partner in crime. “Well. That could’ve gone worse.”

“A lot worse.” Ruby nodded. “Good job, I guess? Go team!” She laughed, and the sound did something funny to Weiss’ insides, forcing a smile onto her lips.

“Tonight was… fun. You know, despite the whole charade.” Weiss said, and she meant it. Having Ruby there to keep her company, she didn’t feel like the perpetual third wheel around Blake and Yang. More than that though, Ruby had been… considerate. Thoughtful. Pushing Weiss when she needed it, but never too much. It was shockingly easy to pretend to like her when at every turn she put Weiss’ needs first.

“Yeah! I mean, I had fun, too.” Ruby smiled at her, open and honest.

Weiss was starting to think she wasn’t only pretending to like Ruby any more. Somehow this clumsy, loud, naive, kindhearted fool was breaking through all her barriers and warming Weiss up to her.

Ruby ran a hand through her hair, scratching the back of her head. “So how long do you think we should stand here to make it look convincing?”

“A minute or two should be fine. Too long and Yang will probably start honking at us.” Weiss glanced back towards the truck, before refocusing on Ruby. “But speaking of looking convincing. Um. Should we maybe…”

She chewed on her bottom lip and couldn’t believe she was about to ask this. But she thought about last weekend, Ruby at her front door and that insatiable urge Weiss had felt to kiss her, even though it never could have happened then. She thought about all the little moments that night when Ruby had surprised her with her kindness and sincerity. And she simply thought Ruby was damn attractive, and Ruby clearly thought the same of her, and here was a perfectly good reason for Weiss to get a taste of her now.

     “…Should we kiss?”

Ruby gave her a look, somewhere between shock and amusement. “I thought that was where you ‘drew the line’.”

She had, and she was suddenly regretting that. Weiss looked up at her, directly into her silvery eyes. “We don’t have to. But…”

“But it would be great for selling this, yeah?” Ruby’s tongue wetted her lips. “So like, if you’re okay with it, and I’m okay with it, then…?”

Weiss stepped forward, closing the gap between them. “Then… we should…” Her hands shook almost imperceptibly as she reached to grab the pockets of Ruby’s jacket. She tugged ever so gently, but it drew Ruby into her like a tidal wave. Ruby’s hands found their way to Weiss’ shoulders, then cupped her face; Weiss was somewhat relieved that Ruby’s hands weren’t completely steady either. Their bodies met, and Weiss tilted up as Ruby leaned down.

Everything was soft, so soft, Ruby’s lips, her palms on Weiss’ cheeks, the way her hoodie bunched in Weiss’ fists as she tightened her hold. She tasted strawberries and vanilla and sugar, the cotton candy flavoring Ruby’s lips. She’d known she was bi for years now, but this was the first time Weiss had actually kissed a woman – and it was intoxicating.

They both readjusted, Weiss wrapping her arms around Ruby’s torso and Ruby cradling the back of Weiss’ head. Their kiss deepened, and Weiss melted into it. Ruby’s tongue ran along Weiss’ bottom lip, followed by a nip from her teeth, and in response a quiet moan buzzed in the back of Weiss' throat. She was hyper aware of every little sensation, Ruby’s fingertips on her scalp, Ruby’s arm around her back now pulling them impossibly close, the curve of Ruby’s breasts pressing into her. It was almost overwhelming. She loved it, got lost in it.

Eventually, far too soon, Ruby pulled away. Not much though; she kept her hold on Weiss, and moved to whisper into her ear. “Do you think that sold it?” Weiss shivered down to her toes, and she had to stop herself from gasping.

She nodded dumbly. “I think that was good enough,” she lied.

It wasn’t enough, not by a long shot. That kiss struck her like it was lightning, igniting a wildfire raging across her senses. It was beyond good, beyond great, and she craved more. More than she was allowed, more that she couldn’t have without first confronting these feelings — and Ruby.

They separated — reluctantly — and Ruby ran the back of her hand across her mouth. “You don’t think we uh,” she cleared her throat, “went overboard or anything?”

Weiss’ senses were still rebooting, but she managed to find the snark-generating part of her brain. “Have you seen the way those two paw at each other in public? We’d have to do a lot worse than that to make them uncomfortable.”

She wouldn’t mind trying that, honestly.

Ruby laughed at that, then shoved her hands into her jacket’s pockets. “Good point.” Lacking any pockets of her own, Weiss had no idea what to do with her hands now that they weren’t on Ruby. She settled on clasping them behind her back.

Several moments passed, with both women not quite able to look each other in the eye. “Soooo… I guess I should get going.” Ruby finally said, hiking a thumb over her shoulder.

“Right. I’ll see you later then?” As soon as the words left her mouth, Weiss’ eyes widened. She actually said that out loud, implied that she wanted to see Ruby again. At some point during the night, that had become the truth.

“Yeah! Totally.” Ruby nodded a bit too vigorously. “I mean, we’ll probably get dragged into something like this again, so it’d make sense…”

Oh. Right. Their ruse, that’s what Ruby was getting at. Not wanting to see Weiss for her own sake; that would be silly. Stop it, you have no right to feel disappointed. Weiss forced a smile. “Of course. That’s… absolutely what I meant,” she said, a desperate attempt to fool herself into believing it.

“Right. I…” Ruby leaned forward ever so slightly, and a jolt shot through Weiss at the thought that Ruby might touch her — might kiss her — again. But whatever intention Ruby had seemed to pass, and she simply waved before turning and trekking over to Yang’s truck. Weiss’ gaze followed her all the way.

She stood there outside the entrance to her building, watching the truck pull away and disappear around the corner, continuing to stare for far too long after it had gone. She reached a hand up, brushing her fingertips across her lips. Whether she was chasing the feeling of their kiss or trying to banish it, she wasn’t sure.

     Oh, fuck.

I very much appreciate the interest, but I actually don't have anything posted publicly yet. If/when I manage to finish this fake dating story, it'll be the first one! It's been suuuuper slow progress though ^^; Hopefully I can get myself to finish it within the next year or so, lol

Do you have fics posted somewhere? I would love to read them. I'm a bit of a sucker for fake-dating AUs.
