Progress Report 14

Greetings. It's me.

This week I've been working mostly on the backend code for the Town and refactoring the dialogue system.

Everything is moving forward steadily, though there's nothing flashy to show just yet. At this point, I think I may have overestimated my current pace and underestimated how much work is still left - so the next update might be a bit delayed.

I'm tidying up the code, gradually turning it all into a system that's both convenient for me to work with and easy to expand later when it’s time to start actively filling the game with content. This is especially true for dialogues - how they're stored and loaded in-game. I need something scalable here so that in the future edits and translations can be done without changing actual in-game dialogue files, logic, conditions, and so on. Setting up such a system turned out to be more difficult than I expected. And I tried more options than I'm willing to admit 🫣

That's all for now. Thank you for your support. Until next time!

Please take your time, a lot of potential and really keen to see where it can go

Thank you! - I wouldn’t say either is easier, but the technical side feels more straightforward. To me personally it's much easier to get a grasp of what’s wrong and how to fix it. With visuals, things are a lot more subjective - it’s harder to tell when something is “right” - I’m still figuring out what the "full time" threshold would look like. I'm sure I’m not there yet, but the support I’ve gotten so far has been super motivating. - It’s not exactly “outsourced” - Hasselnut kindly offered to help with some enemy designs out of their own generosity, which I really appreciate. That said, I’m generally more comfortable working solo. It’s not that I don’t trust others - I just feel more at ease when I can manage the whole process myself without depending on anyone else’s schedule or availability. For now, that’s what works best for me.

Love the art style, please never give up :) Some questions: - Do you find the coding/infrastructure work to be easier than the art or the art easier than the coding/infrastructure - How much money would you need to work on this full time via patreon donations or otherwise (and are you close to this number) - I seen you outsourced the drawing of the enemies, do you think you'll be able to outsource additional aspects of development (maybe coding) to increase development speed or maybe add another person to the team in the future? Or do you prefer to work alone. Love everything you've done so far, keep up the good work :)

Can you give a rough estimate to how long you expect the delay to be? Like, are we talking of a day or two, or rather weeks? Months? Also, as you mentioned the dialogue, for personal interest, roughly how many lines have you written for now? If you remember, that is. ^^

Thanks for informing us. Better to put the work in now so it gets easier later on. While any delays that might come from this are unfortunate, I'd rather have this than a version of the game that comes early but barely holds together with gum and duct tape ^^ And I guess that's what these progress reports are for, anyway. For you to find what works and what not, and what takes time to implement (or rewrite/edit). Thanks for letting us know soon enough.
