Hi Bisscute 😀 From San Antonio Texas USA 😀 Wonderful reaction and analysis and commentary as I have now finished the movie. Your assessment of the movie with a four and a half star rating is very good though I would give it a five as I believe it has all the elements that a true older cartoon or anime film would have as this is what I grew up on and left you with lessons learned and morals to live by.
Here is an excellent documentary about the movie and the themes behind it...
As you watch this documentary, you will see that it reinforces the amazing insight that you have as you watched the movie....
Uncovering Spirited Away: A Documentary Across Japan is a video that explores the real-world locations and inspirations for Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. The documentary includes visits to bathhouses, festivals, and other sites across Japan.

Hi Bisscute 😀 From San Antonio Texas USA 😀 When this movie dropped I have only a bit of time to watch it today which is Tuesday February 3rd and I've already come away with a few thoughts and I will share more after I watch the whole movie on Friday after 2 days of work. Wonderful reaction and analysis and commentary so far and I know it will continue.
You mentioned that you would like to return to Japan tomorrow if you could as all is so beautiful and this being close to spring and the Cherry Blossom festival... I can imagine you amongst the cherry blossom trees in your kimono looking so very very pretty as you have stepped out from the salon... You are becoming a very beautiful woman.
You are correct in acknowledging that this movie is not just for children but is for adults as well and there are metaphors and morals throughout. This is in the grand style of Walt Disney where as he weaved through his stories lessons and morals and metaphors to be learned both by adults and children.
I read that they used hand-drawn animation which goes back to the Disney studios when he was making his early animated movies in the 20s 30s 40s such as Pinocchio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp to name a few.
Your acknowledgment of eating something of this world in order to return to this world is very apt and a wonderful attention to detail as Chihiro is noticing that she is disappearing.
The first moral is the parents seeing all the food and rationalizing that they will pay later after they have eaten and proceed to gorge themselves and make pigs of themselves. Another moral is when Chihiro is that the door and wants to enter without knocking and the knocker cautions her that this is the wrong way to do things... At any closed door you knock first before entering.
The concept of work is good is told throughout in the minutes that I've watched so far. In the case of Chihiro she must earn her freedom by hard work and the freedom of her parents as an atonement for their sins of gluttony and theft.
I look forward to watching the rest of the movie which I believe I will start from the beginning again as this is a very deep moral, metaphorical and metaphysical film which I looked up and saw that won the Academy Award for animation.
(From a Wikipedia write-up)
Spirited Away was a co-recipient of the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and became the first hand-drawn, non-English-language animated film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards. The film is frequently regarded as one of the greatest animated films ever made.
Until Friday...when I finish watching the movie...
Thank you for all your hard work and I appreciate you so much. Have a great day and God bless you with much love and prayers for strength and good health 😀👍💪❤️✔️

Great reaction Biss, this one is hold quite strongly for me, there are so many details and the music is amazing, would love to see a sequel also, but sadly there are not. In a way i do enjoy the untold story and we get to imagine the rest ourself. Always wanted to visit a bathhouse like this too, but as i'm one with tattoos aswell, i would get rejected by the most there. I were to a bathhouse in Baoding China. The staff and the guests took a great interest in me, mostly the elders, i never truely understood why, but there may be something to do with the same reason. Anyhow, when it comes to Hayao Miyazaki, i always expect a true masterpiece of an anime.
