Monster Ed Gein ep 8

Comments

Hi Bisscute 😊 from San Antonio Texas USA 😊 Wonderful reaction and analysis and commentary for Episode 8. Your decision to take a break was very wise as you were at a stage of burnout. Your 2 weeks in Japan was wonderful therapy and allowed you to detox and renew and to set priorities as you go forward with your life. With a new clarity you brought insight into discussing this episode. I might say you're very young and you can pursue your dream of being a psychiatrist and be a help people. You have spoken about the philosophy in Romania of there is not an industry for mental health and therefore your mother persuading you to look in a different direction was wise at the time. She had good intentions for you... always know that. The classes you have taken and the knowledge that you have achieved still are with you and you can be a help to others. Yes, we are product of our past but that does not define our future. We don't necessarily need to continue on that path...We can change. I share your empathy for Ed. I know the Netflix series is called Monster and Ed Gein is the latest installment. His actions were monstrous however he is a victim of conditioning and you point this out very very well in your analysis. I always draw on the attitude of what is the motivational Factor in this presentation. Is this just a good Halloween flick to use the story of Ed Gein fo rthis time of the year or is there more. Again for me I knew nothing of Ed Gein before this presentation. Yes, I have watched the movie Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs. However, I did not know the background of any of these films I just watched them for pure entertainment so this documentary has been very educational for me and I appreciate the time and effort that the producers and director have put in for this presentation. Through diagnosis and medication and therapy Ed came to the realization of what he did, how wrong it was, how unfortunate the publicity influence others and the driving force was always trying to please his mother. For me personally I've never heard of Ed Gein until watching these episodes with you. I will take the point of view as an outsider and with full knowledge that presentations based on facts in a theatrical way can embellish a bit. In many cases there are presentations based on books that do not necessarily follow the original plot however there is always an element of truth in there somewhere. I say this because I am reading the comments of a question of actuality in this presentation by Netflix and I just want to say that I am solely going on what I see in this presentation as I continue my analysis and commentary. Each of us have life experiences that are influenced by people in our lives and this is how I am going to approach this. An eight episode series takes lots of research and a massive effort to condense the amount of material into a cohesive presentation that is both compelling and thought provoking. Again I am basing my comments on the series at hand and I respect those who disagree with the content and I would hope that those who disagree will come forth with their own factual information to refute what has been presented by Netflix. There's a fine line between famous and infamous. This is why people write autobiographies to set the record straight and not allow fabrication and misconception and misinterpretation to define them throughout history. I believe this is the nurse's directive to Ed to him to write his own story. Having watched this is series and knowing full well that this is a dramatization and not a documentary sets you up for the realization of what is being presented and therefore analytically you are ready to accept how the information is being filtered through the director and the producer and you can disconnect from the emotional. All of us are products of our environment and this starts in the womb as this has scientifically been found that the womb is an echo chamber and we are able to hear sounds as we are developing. So even before we are born our minds are consuming. Your approach to watching this series as indeed been very analytical. To dig deeper below the surface to the causality. Based on some of the comments that have been left I agree with the decision to not replace Ed Gein's headstone because this attracts people into the area. In summary, I have a few points. Yes, over the years the funding for mental hospitals has been reduced. Progress in counseling, understanding, medication, and compassion has garnered a neglect to the patients and the institution has been replaced with the term "insane asylum". This is where Ed says to the nurse that here there is no point of it. Here in San Antonio people were admitted to the State hospital but now they are released onto the streets. The city's plan is trying to use old warehouses and convert them into living spaces to get them off the street however the people do not want to go inside because they want to have their freedom ...basically they do not want to abide by the rules. You are exactly correct in that Ed seems squeezed between an institution that used to help him and a legal system here in the United States that cannot have him stand trial because a psychiatrist has deemed Ed to be incompetent rendering him to be in state of hopelessness. All of this aside, Ed has been helped by the system by the fact that he realizes the hopelessness that he is in. The Medication that he has been prescribed as reconditioned his brain from the "smashed in pieces" diagnosis by the psychiatrist to having a more lucid reality allowing him to focus. We see this in the numerous interviews that he has with law enforcement as to understand help them the minds of the serial killers. The nipple fetish goes back to the nursing stage for boys growing up into men and in Ed's case a psychological attachment to his mother and the place of comfort. I find it fascinating in understanding the motivation of someone visiting a person after they have learned that that person's health is in decline. Why not visit that person while they're healthy... I guess it truly depends on the level of relationship that you have with that person whether it be positive or negative. In the case of Adeline, she visiting him after she learned that he was dying. After listening to her, it is revealed that her motivation is to tell him that she has over the years become more like him. She describes the symptoms that she has had and refuses to take medication or even see a professional even with Ed suggesting for her to do so. At this point that sees nothing more to talk about and ends the conversation by saying that he still loves her even after all the attempts of cutting him off those privately and publicly. We know why Adeline did it. We also know that it hurt Ed very badly though he still loves her and this is also a testament to the medication that has been prescribed for him allowing him to remember the situations and see the causes surrounding them. I agree with you that I would have liked to learn a little bit more of how Adeline turned out since we last saw her help with the auction of the Gein car at the Gein farm. Did she get a full-time job with the New York daily News.... That would be interesting to know. You're diagnosing as her being bipolar spot on. Again I want to commend you on your understanding of the psychological in this theory and this allows you to comment very well on the effects of these characters. Again having work in a psychological clinic as a billing clerk I came to understand the patient's diagnosis and treatment in speaking with the psychiatrist and the counselor as well as sitting in on sessions when I finish my work. Our brain is a giant computer more complicated than any machine that man can devise. You mentioned many times during this series of your fascination and I whole hardily agree. Just you wanting to be a psychiatrist keeps you very interested in documentaries and case studies like this and I believe that is why you so enjoy the types of content that you do and make listening to your commentary very enjoyable. It is very very important to be careful as to what you watch and look at me especially when you're young as this could imprint into your mind. As men we are very visual so I believe it is so much more important for men and statistics have shown that most violent criminals are and the heinous crimes that are committed are mostly by men. You talk constantly about triggering effects and in mysteries there were so many for Ed. You also mentioned constantly where the progression could have been stopped. Again I agree with your analysis that we do not excuse what Ed do and yet empathize with him as being conditioned. Absolutely great job of reacting and commenting and analyzing this very provoking and for me very illuminating series. Thank you for all your hard work and I appreciate you so very much. Have a great day and God bless you with much love and prayers for strength and good health bye-bye πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ’ͺ❀️

Thank you so much for your reaction, Biss. As always, interesting and entertaining. I have mixed feelings about the series. It is an artistic interpretation of the Ed Gein story and the whole complex surrounding serial killers and their mindset, motivation, and influence on society. In particular, the cross-references to films such as Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were interesting and very well done. The actors were very good, especially the lead actor, as were the editing and atmosphere, etc. On the other hand, elements were added that do not correspond to reality: the story about Adeline, Ed Gein's alleged help in the investigation of Ted Bundy, and letters from R. Speck. I did not like this fabricated content. It is always a fine line between artistic interpretation and keeping respect for the surviving relatives, for whom such a series with fabricated content is certainly very hurtful. The way they make us feel for Gein because of his mental illness is not totally wrong, but they should not based this on fabricated content by creating a totally different story. Of course, these are just my views and they are open to debate. In conclusion: a well done series that artistically interprets and illuminates the complex topics of serial killers, Ed Gein, and his influence. For the reasons mentioned, however, I would always prefer real documentaries on the subject of true crime.

On July 26, 1984, Ed Gein died from respiratory failure related to cancer; according to some sources, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 77 years old and living at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin. Gein was buried at his family’s plot in Plainfield Cemetery in Wisconsin. His grave was marked by a headstone that, over time, was damaged by souvenir hunters and ultimately stolen in 2000. Although the stone was later recovered, authorities decided to leave the grave unmarked.

The entire episode is fantasy. None of this actually happened. I wish they would have stuck to the facts and shown us what it was really like.

I gotta say I didn't really like the ending. I wish they would have just stuck to the facts and not embellish the ending. I thought is was very unnecessary, especially a certain scene. Had nothing to do with Ed. Actually everything that happened after Ed was caught, really had nothing to do with him. Overall I liked the series just not the way it ended.
