When the show was cancelled, Alan Tudyk(Wash) stole the red button used in the episode "Out of Gas" and gave it to Joss telling him to press it when he got the show picked up somewhere else and they would all come back. Fans of the show raised money to help Joss Whedon shop the show to a new network so it could continue and when no one wanted it, he got the rights to make a feature length film to tie off as much of the series as he could for the fans. When he got the green light, he sent a red button to the actors to let them know he needed them back.
