Hard disagree that this should be the first episode. It would not hit even half as hard if we didn't know the characters. If it was like 4 seasons in it wouldn't be good either. But as an episode halfway into the first season it's perfect. Your reaction alone ("What is happening?" "I want to know!") shows how good it is. If you didn't know any of the characters already, I would guess you wouldn't care as much.
