Great reaction Bisscute, to a great movie! I believe this film has been mis-categorised as a comedy. I don't feel it didn't hit the mark on a comedy level; I don't believe writer Andrew Niccol or director Peter Weir intended for this to be a comedy in any conceivable fashion. It's a drama. It's a pretty dark drama at that. It might be a bit lighter and more family-friendly than Black Mirror, say, but it's actually so ahead of its time and has more in common with Black Mirror, for example, than it resembles any other comedy Jim Carrey has ever starred in. And I think Jim Carrey is the reason is was categorised as comedy. I feel bad for him really, as I would agree that his best material is not comedy, but he's best known *for* comedy, and I feel the audience and critics rather unfairly typecast him and pre-judge him as a result. This is such a wonderful film and so unbelievably before its time. I would like to recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Not even slightly resembling a comedy, a superb film, and Jim Carrey's best role to date in my opinion. I'd be so interested in what you think of it, Bisscute!

2023-11-18 22:56:02 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite films. It's far deeper than a lot of people give it credit for and worth multiple viewings. The plot alone is what it is, but beyond that is a very introspective dive into society as a whole. How even in reality we're all just actors playing a part, all seeing reality differently due to our "habitus". How we're surrounded by images telling us what to think, who our enemies are, what reality is.. all the while completely ignoring all the clues that we're living in a lie. Furthermore those who start to break free of the habitus and see that society as a whole is just made up fiction get treated like they are crazy by those still stuck in the dark. Honestly, it's perhaps some folks locked up in mental assylums who actually see reality as it truly is. As for the genra, I don't think it's meant to be a comedy at all really. It's more of a thought proviking drama that's made funny at times simply because Jim Carry can't help it.
