Coming back to this as I saw something online that I was pretty clueless about when watching the episode. Mai giving Maki a reed stalk in the dream (or whatever you want to call it) was apparently symbolism for being ready for the future.
I've seen a few explanations what the use for the reed is but basically the saying is in japanese "A goose gold a reed between it's mouth" and when literally translated to english it means well prepared (for the future). It's referencing how migratory birds (geese in this case) bring a reed stalk with them when migrating on a long journey over the sea. They use the reed when they need to rest, thus being prepared for the long journey ahead. So Mai giving Maki the reed (sword and freeing Maki from the "curse" of the twins) was making Maki be ready for the future.

Was honestly pretty disappointed in the episode. I think the creative direction the anime took deviated a bit too much from the tone that was established in the manga.

Honestly comparing maki flailing her spear around compared to this is crazy. Guess that's what a month of non stop trauma does to someone

I was missing Toji but not anymore. I already loved Maki since season 1 and basically right off the bat when she was introduced but MAAAAAN this just goes beyond what I expected. Probably now one of my top 3 favorite characters of the show.
