Ok so neither of them are clean so to speak, the grandpa was a thug early on and the younger guy made a mistake, yes a terrible mistake which cost him his life but nonetheless this is the only "bad" thing we saw him do. Meanwhile he fully understood it and wanted to go back solely to apologize to his girl, and on the other hand we see the old man grinning at the end heavily implying he knew he was going to "hell" from the start because of his whole life which we did not see. Also during the game where there is a very "real" possibility of dying 99% of the time basic human survival instinct WILL kick in no matter what, even more so when you realize your opponent is 100% out to get you. In the end there is no concrete right or wrong in this anime because its designed to be morally thought provoking with no clear black and white situation
