If you want to have some more fun with two films that have a very similar tone to Sister Act, I highly recommend Going My Way (1944) and its sequel, The Bells at St. Mary’s (1945). Both are very fun and heart warming, and both were critically received. Going My Way won 7 Academy Awards out of their 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Bing Crosby for playing Father Chuck O’Malley. The Bells at St. Mary’s was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Bing Crosby again (became the first actor to be nominated twice for same role in two different films) and Best Actress for Ingrid Bergman. Honesty, Sister Act and Sister Act 2 being very influenced by these two films as well. There’s enough to make them different but there elements of Going My Way that are in Sister Act, and elements of The Bells at St. Mary’s that are in Sister Act 2.

2026-02-28 15:37:38 +0000 UTCThis is one of my fave childhood movie musicals. Such an incredible soundtrack of iconic 60s and 70s songs. Yes, Whoopi did her own singing. They all did except Wendy Makkena aka Mary Robert, the shy one. If you look closely you’ll see one of the nuns in the background choir is Ellen Dow, who was Rosie in the Wedding Singer - the elderly lady who pays Robbie in meatballs. And also a very young Jim Beaver as one of the detectives. Nuns in Australia at least, still wear modern versions of the habits, but the ones near me only wear the soft veils like Mary Robert, not the full wimple. They also don’t have to be virgins, they can have been married as long as they’re widowed and have no dependent children. I found that interesting, especially since this movie led me to believe they had to be always abstinent. Also, Tara - the purple coat was also a real animal, mink, they just dyed it purple. You don’t want it. RIP to so many of this great ensemble.
