Two entwined figures, starkly lit by cold street lighting, sheltered under the overpass from prying eyes above. A blacked out Range Rover pulled up almost silently.

“We can take it, we can go.”

“She’s still out there Beni! She’ll see.” Beni looked out at their ride. They should have turned off the damn headlights.

“We can outrun her in the motor.”

“She will pick up the fucking thing! Or step on it.”

That was fair. Beni could feel Shelly’s volume in the air. Her Size changed the way everything moved. And everything else was silent. He heard a rustle from somewhere overhead, her puffa, and the creak of a sneaker. More leather in those than a herd of cows. There was an audible rumble as that giant foot settled on the ground, and a swish of her stretch leggings.

“BENI, BENI. DON’T RUN. COME BACK TO ME. YOU KNOW I’LL STILL FORGIVE YA. DROP THAT BITCH, KICK HER TO THE CURB. IN FACT, I CAN KICK HER FOR YA. I CAN SQUEEZE HER BETWEEN MY FINGERS TIL SHE POPS. I CAN SEE YOU AIN’T IN THE FLAT. NOT HAPPY YOU TRIED TO TRICK ME DOH INNIT.”

The voice echoed around the estate, ricocheting and rumbling off concrete walls and through alleys. She was just above them. She had peeped into his flat and seen his TV on, and guessed he wasn’t in. It was a pretty weak diversion. Everyone in the estate would be shaking like a mouse, curtains drawn. They knew better than to out when Shelly was about. Lil gripped him tighter. Beni could feel his hands shaking and felt like his knees were going to give way. If they got in the car they were dead. She was watching it. She was waiting for them to bolt to it. The car was an easy target. It was like a pre made mouse trap.

“Ok, we run for it. But stay under cover! The car will bolt and she’ll go after it. That should buy us thirty seconds. If we get separated head for Moorland Road and try to get to the park.”

“I love you babe.”

“I love you too.” Beni kissed her. “Deep breath. One… Two… Three… Go!”
