Throughout the night, I kept having nightmares where Brit continuously squashed me under her massive foot. She walked all over me in her stinky shoes, torturing me under her soles. Each time I died, I would wake up, but when I fell asleep again, I would end up back in the same spot. I barely got any sleep and then ended up drifting off during classes. The day felt like it dragged on forever. It didn’t help that I had no one to talk to. Lin was ignoring me, and I was afraid to speak to his sister. Luckily it was a Friday, so I had the weekend to look forward to.
“Hey, Tree!” A snotty voice called out from behind me in the hallway, “You look dead. Maybe some more make-up next time before you leave the house. Well, since you badly need help, if you beg, I’ll let you borrow some of mine.”
“My name is Thea, not Tree,” I replied, not having any of it. “And are you sure there is any left? It looks like you used it all up on your face.”
“Oh my God,” some of her friends snickered.
Meg wasn’t happy about my comeback. She took her water bottle and sprayed it all over my legs and feet. I gasped as the cold fluid quickly soaked through the material and drenched my skin.
“Trees need water to grow!” The evil brat laughed.
I stomped away in anger and embarrassment, leaving wet footprints in my absence. I wasn’t keen on attending my last class soaked, so I just went straight home.
“Sweetie, you’re home early! Why are you all wet?” Pae asked, surprised, and a little on edge.
“This stupid Meg girl at college bullies me. She keeps calling me Tree, and today she sprayed water all over my legs. I hate her so much!” I vented.
“Well, trees are beautiful and strong. Maybe it’s a compliment?
“Really, mom? You’re taking her side?
“I’m not taking sides…”
Before my mom could finish, I noticed my dad passed out at the dinner table, “What’s up with dad?”
“Ohh, you know, he’s been so busy. He’s just taking a nap right now.”
“Dad? Are you alright? He doesn’t look so good.”
“He’s fine, sweetie, just needs some space. Why don’t you run off to your room to finish any assignments so you can have the weekend off.”
“Okay…” I said, being forced to go to my room like I was 14 again.
I knew something was up. I hopped into bed, tucked myself in, and began concentrating on the tabletop. I didn’t have the time to make a perfect lucid jump, so I rushed my breathing techniques and closed my eyes. This was my fastest leap ever, taking only a few minutes before I found myself two inches in height and standing on the kitchen table. I was naked as always but invisible, so it didn’t matter.
“You’re getting sloppy, Apate,” my mom said, talking to herself. “The time isn’t right for Thea to learn the truth. This was too close.”
“What truth?” I said, practically begging for it.
Pae looked around the kitchen as if she heard me. And then she did something that I could have never expected. The shock hit me like a tidal wave causing me to physically fall backward onto my ass. I couldn’t believe it. The scene looked like it was taken from a science fiction movie. My mom morphed into my dad’s body. It happened so quickly that I barely saw it. A faint streak of ghostly mist sucked into his back, causing him to sit upright.
“I can’t be leaving Hades in the kitchen like this for Thea to come home to,” my dad whispered but in my mom’s tone.
The man who I thought was my father, then mumbled a bunch of random words which sounded Greek. Once he finished, my mom morphed back into her own entity. I was beyond comprehending what had just happened.
“Anything good in the newspaper today?” Pae asked her husband.
“I’ll check, dear,” he replied like he usually would.
My mom smiled and then added, “I’ll get started on dinner.”
The movement went on around me, but I just sat there in the middle of the table. My brain hurt, my body hurt, everything hurt. My mom had been lying to me my whole life about my dad. He was just some zombie thing that she controlled and brainwashed at will. Was he even living at all on his own? Every interaction with him was actually just my mom’s actions. That also meant that she had powers, and Lin was right. I am the daughter of Apate, the Greek Goddess of deceit.
How can I trust my own mother ever again?
An hour went by as I tried to sort through my new emotions. My brain didn’t know how to process this new information. My mom then set some massive cutting board on the table, and the vibrations brought me back to reality. I was still tiny and within my lucid projection.
“Huh, weird, I’ve never held being a tiny this long before. I should probably get back to my normal body.” I said, squinting my eyes.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get back. My body felt kind of numb like I was stuck in a limbo state.
“I guess I’ll just have to die to get back,” I added.
My mom began cutting some vegetables off to the side, and I decided to make that my death. My first few times dying were really tough. It’s terrifying, especially when you don’t really know if you’ll wake up after. I was a little more comfortable with it now; I just didn’t want any pain. After some deep breaths, I made the leap before my brain talked me out of it. Apate’s knife made contact with my belly, except it flattened a line into my stomach instead of slicing. The line then popped back to normal; however, I was in excruciating pain as I rolled away.
“Ughhh, fuck, why didn’t that work?” I cried, holding my belly.
The numbness that I felt was like a barrier, preventing me from returning to my normal self. I was stuck as an invisible two-inch tall tiny woman.
“Getting swallowed by Jia worked last time. Maybe I could try that.” I mumbled.
Pae finished making dinner and then went into my bedroom to check on the real me. She must have thought I was sleeping. I’m pretty sure she tucked me in. My mom was clueless that I was standing before her as she sat down.
“Am I a good mother?” She asked my dad.
“Of course, sweetie. Sexy and powerful too.” He replied.
“Stop,” Pae laughed. “You’re just saying that because you have to.”
“You know it’s true,” my dad added, beginning to eat his dinner. “Delicious. Thea would have loved it too.”
He was right, I would have loved to eat this. Chicken, veggies, and mashed potatoes were my favorite. But I’ll just get eaten by my mom instead. The massive giantess began eating her dinner, so I stepped out onto her plate. I grabbed onto the end of the fork just as it was raising back up. Pae’s mouth grew bigger and bigger, giving me second thoughts. The woman’s lips wrapped my body; although, I had to bail. I clung to her bottom lip as her teeth crushed the food I used to be next to. It was terrifying.
“I, I can’t do it,” I stuttered.
I kept thinking that I might not have died again, and then I would have gotten chewed and digested, feeling every bit of unbearable pain. I didn’t want to be trapped in my mom’s belly with her stomach acid.
“Mhmm, wish Thea was here to try this,” Pae hummed, licking her lips.
I was there, and I got knocked from my grip on her puffy lip. I free-fell until landing in her soft open cleavage. My body got wedged between the massive mounds, unable to escape. Being right up against her chest, I heard the pile of food splash into her stomach. I was at least thankful that I wasn’t part of that mush. Pae’s breasts were squishy and quite comfortable. But I still needed to work on escaping before anything else happened like last time.
