I was in a bit of a slump with figure drawing, and actually felt like I was getting worse despite the online courses I’m watching. One of the instructors drew with a sharpie so I thought I’d change things up and give it a try.
Normally I draw with a non erasable pencil, but even that is pretty forgiving. When I started drawing with sharpie I saw a lot of problems with my line quality come out. The lines lacked confidence and were even going back to the beginner “chicken scratches”.
It took a couple pages (not shown) but I started to get the hang of it, gained confidence, and my drawings improved! There’s nothing wrong with drawing things twice because these are just for learning, but the permanency of the pen made me slow down and think more before putting a line down. I think this is the shakeup that my practice needed.
I also feel like I’m starting to understand the human figure a lot better. My gesture drawings have weight, and as I’m drawing I’m aware of how the model carries herself and how I can make any attitude more clear in the gesture.
