I’m excited to share this cute sketchbook spread! For some reason drawing at the zoo isn’t a problem for me, but I become hesitant with my own pets. Maybe it’s because they’re free to walk away from me, or maybe I’m worried my drawings won’t look like them.
My cats love me so I actually don’t have to worry too much about them walking away. Gumbo (orange cat, he’s all the cats on the left page and top three on the right) walked around a lot but stayed close to me. Domino really liked that I was drawing him, especially when I laid on the ground to be at his level. I did the drawing of his face (bottom left of the right page), then he stood up and moved right in front of my sketchbook and laid down. Then I did the top right drawing of him. I like that I captured his “I dare you to pet me and give me a reason to bite you” look.
A while ago I was working on trying to mimic the style of Anatolii Vladimirovich Kokorin, and I just wasn’t getting it. I decided to (temporarily) abandoned this project. Then suddenly I drew a little sketch that looks like one of his own! It’s the furthest right drawing of Gumbo, where he’s scratching his ear. I obviously had very little time with this pose and Gumbo moved after I had only drawn a few lines, forcing me to wing it. This led me to severely simplify, and that turned out to be the key to Kokorin’s stylization!

I looove the Staedtler pen in this thick size. New favorite pen!
