Gallimimus Reconstruction

I did another reconstruction to practice my skills and test out a new brush pack.

I had so much fun painting the black and white feathers. A new breakthrough! I generally avoid painting birds with complex patterns because I don’t know how to paint them, but this turned out pretty good.

I struggled the most with the beak. I think it would have worked out a lot better if I would have sculpted a model, but since this is an exercise this is the best I can reasonably do. Something to try and do better on the next one!

I also tried out fur brushes from Ville Sinkkonen (@villesinkkonen). Below is before I started playing with those brushes and softening a few edges. I didn’t spend as much time softening edges as usual. The beak is so blegh it didn’t feel worth it.

I think I found a nice balance for how much research to do on what is just a practice illustration. I read the important parts of the Wikipedia article! Some very interesting things, like maybe the eyes being unable to move in their sockets, and the beak only being keratinous on the tip.

I spent quite a lot of time just on the sketch, trying different ideas for the integument and trying to make the horrible beak work.

In total I spent 2 hours and 15 minutes on this one. I forgot to note exactly what brushes I used so the breakdown will be more general.
