Welcome to the Shadowlands -- a dark and silent realm where the psychic energies of corrupted aspects go to roam the vast, shapeless wastes for eternity. Inadvertently made by humanity in the process of creating The Gift , the realm is an unforeseen consequence of manipulating imaginary time. In some cases, the digitized personalities held within The Gift unravel when exposed to the disrupting effect of temporal tidal forces. The result is an amorphous psychic energy pattern that can only exist in the endless void of the Shadowlands. To travelers from the corporeal world who can project their consciousnesses into this realm, these forms are known as wraiths.

It is here that Lady Helena Persephone Xanthippe, Anassa of the Helenes and Warden of the Shadowlands, works to ensure that the realm remains a refuge for these corrupted aspects. But, there are some who would use the unique power of the Shadowlands to further their conquests in the corporeal world.

When Lady Xanthippe learns of a scheme undertaken by Sovereign Emperor Frederick to build a powerful weapon in the Shadowlands to use in his war against the people of the Carthagian Badlands, she sets out to find and destroy the device. The stake are dire. Failure to do so will bring death to the coproreal world and destruction to the Shadowlands.
