Gift of Hedone: Poll - Adventuring Experience Points

Hello you sexy Deviants,

I will be doing a bigger post eventually about how I plan to implement making your team stronger beyond just being a higher Level. But I did want to do a Poll about gaining experience when you are out and about Adventuring not in the town, and how you would prefer to earn Experience Points.

Overarching Category: Real Time vs Resting

Real Time:
You would get the experience points right upon defeating an enemy

Resting:

Your Experience would get accumulated whilst you were out adventuring, and once you go back to Town, your Experience points would be tallied up and earnt.

Set Enemy Experience Points Earnt:

Per Enemy- Experience Points are set:
Regardless of what level you are, a level 5 enemy would have X amount of experience points.

Per Enemy/ Real Time - Experience Points can fluctuate:
Depending on what level you are, a level 5 enemy that you fought at level 5, had 1 0 EXP, but now fighting it at level 10, it only gives 5 EXP

Each have their own pros and cons, but I wanted to gauge your thoughts. Also feel free to make other suggestions in the comments :)

Alrighty! Keep up the good work!

Jazzman

Hey Jazzman, thank you for the question, just being here supporting the patreon or even just supporting on my socials is more than I could ask for contributing to polls and forms etc. Right now I am looking for additional experienced pixel artists but thats about it for stuff beyond general support and feedback :)

Jiggly Pixels

Is there any way to help with gift of Hedone?

Jazzman

That's a really interesting point Jason, maybe as like a supplementary addition to the standard EXP gain, thank you for that idea and suggestion :)

Jiggly Pixels

Always appreciate your honesty and feedback PlantBro it means a lot!

Jiggly Pixels

haha thank you so much for the feedback Erik!

Jiggly Pixels

Thank you os much for taking the time to share this and provide your feedback Aqueron that really means a lot!

So if do the resting system, you can’t level up until you rest? If that’s right, it would be hard to progress efficiently. But maybe if you did like bonus objectives for a mission that exp could only be gained by resting. That way you could still use it, it sounds intriguing but not if it’s the only way to gain xp

Jason Erickson

I recently like Resting cuz its something different than the usual instant level up. Fluctuating and Set XP are effectively, basically the same thing. The only way to balance set XP is by inflating the ammount of needed XP each level which is just reducing the % of what you get of what you need.

PlantBro

Getting XP only when resting sounds like a painful way to play to me. I also like the idea of sliding XP gain as you outlevel a mob because killing a million slimes shouldn't be as rewarding as actually playing the game. (Unless you are just that into the slime animations that is. 😁)

There is also a correlation between the points earned and the needed points to level up. If you want to make your game longer (with sense, that the game doesnt feel you have to grind an eternity to level up), the fluctuating points works better in my opinion. In DnD all monster have fixed amount of exp but that is because the needed points to level up is increased exponentially. With fluctuating points the needed points have not to be increased that much because you are blocking the level up making monsters give less point to stronger players, encouraging them to go for bigger enemies. Do you have to increase the points needed in fluctuating systems? Yes, because the players wants to see that its character is evolving.

Aqueron

That's a fantastic question, and I'm not entirely sure yet, most likely if I were to explore fluctuations the answer would be yes, but just a matter of to what degree that's all

Thank you so much for the feedback Markus I really appreciate it!

Real time please. ff15 rest time didn't like it. Kept on fighting enemies till I go to an enemy that way higher lvl forgetting I need to rest to get the exp. Kill the momentum to travel back or to find a rest point.

Markus Silva

With fluctuating would it also increase in xp if you were to defeat an enemy that's lvls higher than you?

Ghost xii

Thank you for the feedback my friend, I appreciate it!

Jiggly Pixels

Thank you so much for your feedback and comment Liam, it's really helpful, definitely something to research more!

Jiggly Pixels

I really appreciate the feedback here David, thank you so much 😊

A Dark Souls style of EXP could be fun as well. It gives the game a little more excitement and suspense to the game.

Making an RPG without traditional exp mechanics is quite difficult. So I’d recommend realtime/ fluctuating exp, but set exp would also work well. But if you weren’t satisfied with that answer, I’d recommend researching both good and bad RPGs that don’t have traditional leveling up mechanics so you know where to go.

I’ve played homebrew DnD campaigns with the resting EXP set, and the system was so terrible that we bitched about it every time we would end a combat encounter. It’s really annoying to not get level rewards while out, and it’s even more pronounced when certain skills/actions/passives are locked behind said levels.
