Behind the Scenes - Vice President Scrimm

For the NASTRAND corporation's Vice President, I leaned heavily on a couple visual inspirations.

One of those inspirations would be Breetai and Exedor from the 1984 Macross movie, where they looked more alien than their TV show counterparts.

Macross is probably the first series I was a big fan of, and the visual style stuck with me and seeps into a lot of my work.

Another inspiration for Scrimm is The Great Owl from The Secret of NIMH.

I really wanted to capture that presence and gravitas the owl has.

There's also some inspiration from the Space Jockey from the original Alien movie.

Scrimm's name is, of course, a reference to Angus Scrimm who is most famous for playing the sinister Tall Man from my favourite horror movie series, Phantasm.

As a side note, it wasn't until I began working on The Sprawl that I realized "evil ball" is a super common horror and fantasy trope. Phantasm, Lord of the Rings, Heavy Metal, and several more that I'm forgetting at the moment.
