Float is lacking in speed and control, and has a constant mana drain. It's more of an ignore-gravity thing than a proper flight spell. If he could flick it on and off instantly, perhaps he could build it into a stair run, but it has a finite casting time even if it's shorter. Using it to hover in front of the control panel for some amount of time is possible, but not if he needs to spend hours researching the language. His mana would run out.
