Tutorial 002

1 - Start limited b/w tone range...don't focus on lines yet

I flip my image horizontally a lot... I apologize.

2 - Once I get a tone range I like... I do a light (1st draft) line sketch over it

KEEP THAT  SKETCH LINE LAYER SEPERATE

Some of these lines will be used on the finish later

3 -  Start slowly building up color around the ONLY THING that matters in a pinup... THE FACE

IT IS LITERALLY THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS

You only remember the pinup artists that draw amazing faces and forget the rest

If you don't get a good face in this stage go back to your OG sketches and cross reference

Your initial sketches might have something better before you ruined it.

Make duplicates and multiple files of all your faces you've done already.

If you still don't get a good face start fresh and draw a new one over the top!

4 -  I block in simple color with a Vivid Light layer effect over the top of my B/W sketch

Notice how I've made duplicates of my limited palette all over to quickly sample as I color

5 -Tightening the face with oranges. I am now colorizing over the top my vivid light layer.

Im not a fan of inking faces...I think this a process you slowly build up in tighter and tighter sketches instead of trying to draw crisp linework over and ruin it

I have the mask sketched out on a layer over the top

Same to arms. Orange in the light and blue reflection on the arm shadows

6 - Now to add my linework. I get really quick and loose and build up to tighter as I go

8 - Now remember that sketch line layer we made in the beginning? THAT LINEWORK was underneath the vivid light layer. That line is colorized!

Now... we can keep the ones that help turn the forms and erase the ones that hinder.

The helmet is the most fucked...were going to erase all of that sheeeiitt...

And the final product that will hopefully go for a sticker...we'll see...sorry again about the horizontal image flipping...I'm crazy

Comments

One more thing...while its important to learn proportions initially....you're going to want to arrive at your own style eventually. Just be aware that its important to be unique, especially in this uncertain technological environment we are heading into.

John Zylstra

I can do that! Especially for heads

John Zylstra

Do you have any tutorials on drawing anatomy? like proper proportions etc
