Tutorial 001 (2 hour sketch in Photoshop)

So I came up with this face from memory and it looks a lot like Emma Roberts
What's great about a celebrity is there will be plenty of photos refs online
But most importantly the more A list celeb, the more likely you’ll get the light source you made up
Well get one later...
Notice how my sketches don't have much linework yet; I like to do it way down the line after color
So we tighten up the image in simple greys...
Don't go too deep black and blinding white right away
Stay grey for as long as humanly possible
Simple 3-5 tone range
Slowly building up dark here; mostly in the eyes to draw in viewer
Darks are on the green labeled layer and something loud, so you don't merge or move it
Once I get the darks where they are most needed I merge down
The red boxes are how i multiply the color over
Then you can start adding the other colors in that same vivid light layer
I kind of just airbrush it in with soft brush since I did a lot my hard edge tonework in grey already
When I'm done putting the colors in, I do the heavy hard black inkwork after
Now...I don't like how it came out so....
We go back to the original sketch and we look up Emma Roberts online:
If something specific on the face you drew feels off
Stare at that exact area in your reference for an uncomfortably long time.
Like 2 minutes. Then flip your eyes very quickly to yours
You see it? Good
After much back and forth and way too much make up I arrived here:
I still don't love it.
