We shall 💜 Supernatural

Kristina Fagan

I like this episode -- it's definitely sad and hard to hear about, but the backstory on Booth helped to give his character more depth, for sure. I also liked seeing the Angela and Hodgins scenes. I mentioned with the desert episode about Angela that I had written a piece of fanfic for a friend, for her birthday. Another friend read that piece and liked it, so she asked me to write one more, this one about Booth and Angela's friendship. She especially liked their flirty banter and wanted a scene or story in which they were the main focus. The piece I wrote for her is meant to take place between The Graft in the Girl (last episode, 1x20) and this one, 1x21, Soldier on the Grave. I always found it really interesting how amped up Booth was from the very start of this episode -- he was already so angry that anything Brennan said seemed to put him on edge. He was so defensive. Part of that, I could understand, because of the experience he mentioned at the end of this episode. But I figured, he must have had a lot of war experiences and difficult memories swirling in his head at the very start of this case, to make him *that* angry that quickly. He's usually much more patient with Brennan. So when I wrote a piece for my second friend, I chose to write it as if it was a scene between Booth and Angela after the events of Booth's boss's daughter being sick (and after the interviews the team had with the state department lady in a previous episode), and right before this soldier themed episode. I felt like if Booth had already had a previous conversation with Angela that stirred up something personal for him, it made sense then that he'd already be on guard and defensive when this soldier insurgence case occurred. Plus, in a previous episode (I think the one with the people living underground?) we'd already learned that Angela and Booth talked privately, because Angela came to Brennan and yelled at her for charging around in the dark underground when she didn't know what was down there and how the victim had died, and that Angela felt Brennan was being reckless, and that Booth felt that way too. Brennan had responded, "Booth told you?" which made me think that Booth and Angela probably have become friends, in a small way, enough to talk about Brennan, so I felt like that was a good base for the story I wrote for my friend, since she wanted it to be about Angela and Booth. I chose to make it about their friendship and a conversation they could have had before this episode took place, which might have given Booth some food for thought, enough that after he got past his anger, he was finally able to tell Brennan a personal story about something he'd been through. It was a fun experiment, writing that piece. I didn't know much about the military or snipers, so I researched snipers and I talked to a friend who'd been in the Navy, and talked online with a couple people who'd been in the Army, and I ended up doing some research on some of the areas that Booth had hinted that he'd been as a solider, and found some very compelling first-person accounts that helped to inform my story. I never thought I'd end up writing something about Booth -- Hodgins tends to be my favorite character on the show -- but it was a fascinating exercise, and I'm actually quite proud of the final result. I call it "The Truth in the Art." :) If you find yourself curious, I'd love to hear what you think! https://archiveofourown.org/works/811551 Anyway, I appreciate this episode for the depth of character we get to see about Booth. Throughout season 1, most of the emphasis has been on Brennan's growth as a character, and her emotions, so it was good to see some of that touched on for Booth in this one. I think it added some extra heart to him in a way we hadn't gotten to see before this point.
