Omg I just got full body chills again watching the reveal at the end. It's seriously one of the most well done twists like it's just so emotional and makes the whole show make sense! it's so hard to explain to people what the show is about and how good the show is without giving that away, but it's so worth it to see their reaction to the twist!

And shame on you, Travis, for blaming your mom for what a big baby you were. 😜 I had two babies in the nine pound range despite putting on only 25 and 27 pounds respectively for each pregnancy. My body has never been the same since having babies and they are now adults.

2025-06-23 14:49:48 +0000 UTCI’m also holding out hope that the “stop making excuses and just lose the weight” dialogue that we saw in this first ep gets unpacked and maybe goes a bit deeper- as I know first hand how this kind of narrative just perpetuates the self abusive trauma loop and in a broader sense perpetuates societal fat stigma.

2025-06-22 22:02:32 +0000 UTCOk. So I’ve never seen this show and was reluctant to watch it for a couple reasons when it was on. I will definitely say the overall concept is very cool and interesting. I knew the part about the parents and the kids but not the adopted kid, again- very cool. An excellent pilot episode, I agree. One reason I was hesitant to give it a try is because Mandy Moore has always kinda irritated me for some reason - think it’s the way she talks but I’m sure I’ll get past that since I was OBSESSED with the movie A Walk to Remember! The bigger issue for me is Kate. As someone currently living in a larger body after 3 decades of struggling with disordered eating, body dysmorphia, and generally tying my self worth to my body size, I don’t love seeing a fat person’s character be entirely about their body and trying to lose weight. I understand that at the time this came out we really only had fat women on TV as comedic relief or side kicks so this probably seemed like progress, but I still don’t love it. I’m going to try to keep watching in the hopes that Kate may have something more to do than counting calories as the story develops because I definitely see the potential in this show overall.

My sister and I had very different reactions to the whole thing and still have very different relationships with our mom 23 years later. The entire reunification was surreal AF. *also, my sister has pics of her and Alan Thicke at restaurants in Ventura Ca. 😄 (she was a server) *Kate covering food in the trash so she doesn't go get it and leaving notes for herself...ugh. Been there. This re-watch is going to kick me in the lady balls.

Travis, get ready because you're gonna cry A LOT watching this show 😭😭 Also, get ready to fall in love with Jack Pearson/Milo Ventimiglia 😍😍😍 Fun facts: Show creator Dan Fogelman also wrote Cars, Tangled, Crazy Stupid Love and wrote, directed & produced the movie Life Itself (which you watched on here). He's also worked on several TV shows. The character of Kate is loosely based on his sister Deborah (who served as a consultant for the show) and Caitlin Thompson (who plays the woman in the support group complaining about a few pounds) is his wife. The show was conceived as an 80-page movie script revolving around 8 adults who would be revealed to be octuplets. Other titles considered include "36", "The Story of Us" and "Happy Birthday". There are a few hints throughout the episode that Kevin and Kate are twins/triplets and that Randall is their brother. For example, in the scene where Randall gets an email saying that they found his biological father, an email titled "It's Our Birthday Bro" from Kevin can be seen in his inbox. In spite of playing their mum, Mandy Moore is younger than the actors for Randall, Kevin and Kate. She is 8 years younger than Sterling K. Brown (Randall), 7 years younger than Justin Hartley (Kevin) and 4 years younger than Chrissy Metz (Kate). Dan Fogelman intentionally recruited behind-the-scenes talent that would reflect the diversity of his cast, with the goal of bringing greater authenticity to the dialogue and storylines. These include black directors Regina King & George Tillman Jr., and black female writers Kay Oyegun & Jas Waters (they were part of a 30% black core writing staff; far outpacing the industry standard of 5%). Mandy Moore won her role after an audition suggested by Dan Fogelman, whom she knew from working on Tangled. Chrissy Metz was almost completely broke when she landed the role of Kate and only had 81 cents in her bank account. Sterling K. Brown (Randall) and Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth) both also appeared on Third Watch and they have known each other since grad school. Rebecca says she's "Shamu" before her water breaks. The original Shamun, a female orca, was captured in 1965 and died in 1971. Since then, the name has been passed down to the star orca whale at SeaWorld. As for the cast, you're obviously familiar with Mandy Moore. I don't know if you've seen Gilmore Girls but Milo Ventimiglia's (Jack) breakthrough role was in that. He was also in Heroes and I can see you've seen at least S1. He's also appeared in movies such as Rocky Balboa (as Rocky's son), Dirty Deeds, Pathology, Grace of Monaco, Devil's Gate, Second Act (with J. Lo and Vanessa Hudgens) and The Art of Racing in the Rain (with Amanda Seyfried). During this show's run, he received 3 Emmy nominations. He has a self-described "crooked mouth", having been born with damaged facial nerves causing the left side of his mouth to remain immobile – much like Sylvester Stallone with whom he worked in Rocky Balboa. Sterling K. Brown (Randall) starred in the miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, for which he won an Emmy (he also won an Emmy AND a Golden Globe for this show), where he portrayed prosecutor Christopher Darden. He was also in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel & Paradise (witten, directed & produced by Dan Fogelman), has been in several movies and done voice work in Frozen II. For this show, he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama TV Series, making him the first black man to win this category in the ceremony's 75-year history at the time. And for his role in American Fiction, he was nominated for an Oscar. He was included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018. Chrissy Metz (Kate) had a recurring role on American Horror Story: Freak Show (S4) and has appeared in movies such as Sierra Burgess Is a Loser & Breakthrough. The latter is a true story about John Smith, a 14-year-old boy who fell through an icy Missouri lake. He was without a pulse for about an hour and was proclaimed dead before his pulse came back, only when his mother came in (to say goodbye) and started praying, begging God to save him (Chrissy plays the mother in the movie). She is also a singer and has her own band called Chrissy and the Vapors. In 2024, she competed in S11 of The Masked Singer. Justin Hartley (Kevin) played Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in Smallville. But, before that, he starred in soap operas Passions & The Young and the Restless. He also had recurring roles in Revenge and Mistresses (which are both shows I think you'd enjoy!) and he's been in movies such as A Bad Moms Christmas, Senior Year & The Noel Diary. He currently stars in the show Tracker. Ron Cephas Jones (William) unfortunately died in 2023 at the age of 66 from a long-standing pulmonary issue. His daughter Jasmine originated the dual roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in Hamilton on Broadway (as well as appearing in the movie). Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth) had recurring roles on Louie, NCIS, The Following, and The Blacklist, as well as having a main role on The Residence. Her middle name Kelechi means "Thank God" in Nigeria's Igbo language.
