And this is definitely one of the episodes that brings up questions of morality versus non-interference. Even though I find the way their society was being run to be horrible, denying children the opportunity to be children... is it our right to interfere.

I think we can take Jack's less confrontational actions, possibly one of two ways. Either he was just simply wanting to show Merrin a different perspective, that of what a child's life could be. One that was arguably stolen from her before she had any awareness. Or that he is far cleverer than he wishes to let people think he is. Foreshadowed by the jibe near the beginning. He is maybe demonstrating he had a greater understanding of what could happen once she had to inevitably return, to have her knowledge removed.
