Syl: Chapter 344

Chapter 344: Regicide

Ha! This day keeps getting better and better!

At first, I was a little concerned to see such powerful magic on display by the royal mermen pair. While I couldn't be frozen, I could still be trapped by ice, and being able to freeze anything underwater was an almost-perfect ability.

But when the mermen queen unleashed lightning, I could only laugh in response. What would have been a fatal weakness for me was nothing but a boon, and I eagerly took it and was waiting to unleash it back on them. That was when I made an important discovery!

Almost every one of my slime traits had received some type of upgrade from being uncapped and merged into [Primordial Slime]. I had been slowly trying to figure them out and to discover new, powerful combinations. [Voltaic Slime] was one that I hadn't really noticed much change in, other than being completely immune to any self-harm from being so conductive.

That was until I easily took in the epic lightning blast of the queen—and no, a remarkably higher capacity was not what I figured out!

I can now amplify any lightning I absorb!

Yes, that was the new ability my uncapped [Voltaic Slime] had gained. I roughly estimated that I had amplified it by more than half, and, looking at my [Primordial Slime LV 17], I concluded that it was probably boosted by seventy percent.

Regrettably, I hadn't found anything spectacularly new with [Blaze Slime], which was what I had employed against the king. Other than being able to reach ludicrous temperatures to completely destroy his icy prison, it still functioned identically to before my prismatic evolution.

I had fired the lightning right back at her, nearly taking her out in the process. If I had targeted the king, he probably wouldn't have survived, but I had wanted to give the queen a taste of her own medicine.

Does it work on my own [Lightning Magic] too?

I quickly began casting spells inside of myself, with no fear of any repercussions. The result was quickly apparent, as whatever electrifying spell hit my slime was boosted further and promptly stored within the [Voltaic Slime].

The king and queen must have realized what I was doing as they tried to disrupt the magic. It was a frightening display of power as even my own Mana aura was being oppressed, and the usually ample radius was suppressed to barely an inch away from my slimy membrane.

Too bad for you two, I'm casting inside of myself. If you can't penetrate my slime, then you're out of luck!

They must have quickly realized that what they were doing had no effect, as soon after they tried to escape. However, I was more than ready, and the split second the king twitched, I unleashed the storm brewing inside my slime!

As if summoning judgment from a lightning god, a blinding light streaked across the ocean depths before bursting in a dazzling explosion, followed by a thunderous explosion as if the world had cracked apart. The pure raw energy on display was like a lightning god had been summoned, and nobody was safe from its wrath—well, except for me, of course!

The king was swiftly executed, not even having the decency to leave behind a corpse. Not only that, but it had taken out a considerable number of mermen unfortunate enough to be caught in the tremendous area of effect. It was far more potent than I had expected, bringing a whole new meaning to "shooting fish in a barrel".

Even the queen had been struck, although, unlike the others, she actually survived the aftermath, and the instant she recovered, she tried to retreat.

Oh no, you don't! I still need your profile!

The queen had dropped all pretense and was not even trying to disrupt the magic in the area anymore as she activated [Thunder Step] and began bolting away. It was a risky maneuver on her part, as it looked like she had no intention of trying to ground herself.

I chased after her using my own [Thunder Step], and when those chains ran out, I switched to [Elemental Step]. It was a deadly game of cat and mouse, but this mouse was slippery and notably faster than I even when just swimming. I tried firing off blasts of lightning, explosive needles, harpoons, and anything else I had available.

I guess [Dimension Magic] is my only option.

I continued the pressure while rapidly forming the coordinates to arrive directly in her path. I would have liked to have just teleported her straight towards me, but I suspected she had a considerable amount of magic resistance, and even with [Displaced], I'd more than likely hit a wall.

At least she's so focused on escaping that she's stopped using her magical disruption.

This was the benefit of always keeping some cards hidden: she knew I had [Lightning Magic], but once she saw I could cast it inside myself, she knew it was a pointless endeavor. Now, I could ambush her with a timely teleport and seal the deal.

Even with [Triangulate], these on-the-fly coordinate calculations still aren't the best. I hope Riftmancer has a better solution for me.

I bided my time, and when I spotted an opportune moment, I struck. Using the coordinates and my almost completed [Warp] recreation, I teleported right where she was heading as a bolt of lightning.

No matter how fast she was with [Thunder Step], she couldn't beat the power of literally teleporting. I'd also prepped my [Sub-Cores] to cast [Expansion] on the surrounding area, just in case she had any hidden cards of her own.

Her expression upon seeing me was terror, and we sent a swarm of tendrils to seize her. She tried to swim, but when she hit the expanded area, she slowed down enough that I caught her by the tail.

In an instant, she retaliated with a flurry of lightning and began frantically swinging her trident at the tendrils. She was actually strong enough to fend off a few of them, but it was an endless legion, and I was immune to half of her fighting power. If she hadn't been injured, she might have had a chance, yet she ultimately ended up engulfed in endless slime.

<Profile [Mermen] updated.>

Victory!

But before I could celebrate and examine my spoils, there was suddenly another notification that I couldn't ignore.

<Your deeds have not gone unnoticed.>

Oh, what's this?

<You have destroyed a major stronghold of an advanced monster species. This will impact the world.>

Um… Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

<Your repeated actions have left a mark on the world. You have the qualifications to unlock Legend Points. Your deeds are being judged…>

Yay? Well, more points are always good, right?

There was an awkward silence. Evidently, the system was still judging me.

I wonder what Legend Points are used for?

<Legend Points can be exchanged universally for other points. The following points are currently available to you:

I gasped. This was precisely what I needed—if I could earn enough of these new points, I wouldn't have to worry too much about the horrible ten-point cost to uncap something.

Still… Why do I get four points for skills, but only three for traits? Is that Gramps saying that traits are worth more?

I could understand Profession Points being at a lower ratio, after all, you didn't gain them at every level. Still, seeing that skill points were more efficiently exchanged left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Of course, if Legend Points were easy enough to obtain, then it wouldn't really matter that much at the end of the day. I waited with bated breath for the system to finish explaining my points, and thankfully, it pinged me shortly after.

<The following deeds are worthy of a Legend Point:

Wait… that's it?

I was dumbfounded. Everything I'd done was only worth a measly three points? I swiftly voiced my complaints.

Surely I've done many more impressive things worthy of a point or two! What about banishing the demon, or fighting the kobold hordes, or defeating that water spirit, or that mini-dragon, or anything else? I conquered three dungeons! If we want to look outside of combat, what about my magical exploration and [Skill Deconstruction]?

<Warning: You have brought an advanced monster species to the brink of extinction in a particular region.

You have been marked, and the last remnants of the species will seek to destroy. They will be able to sense your current location, regardless of the distance, and seek you out. Should you survive this ordeal and defeat the last remnants, you shall be awarded a Legend Point.>

I wasn't sure how I felt about this. Obviously, I was thrilled about another Legend Point, but having an enemy permanently sense my location went against the subterfuge I had worked so hard to achieve. If they all threw themselves at me and it was over within a week or two, that would be good. However, if it were a prolonged process, it could be a real thorn in my side.

Well, whatever… What's done is done, I'll just have to tackle it as it comes.

I teleported back to Azulean and got a head start on clearing my mark by defeating any survivors. I also took the opportunity to collect anything that might be valuable, from trinkets to bricks to anything that survived the crushing of the deep ocean.

During this entire process, I was already seeing the effects of this mark, as some of the mermen that had successfully retreated were swimming at me with bloodshot eyes as they were blinded by rage. They weren't a threat to me, after all, I had pretty easily killed their two royals, but it was unnerving to see them in such a frenzy and disregarding any sense of self-preservation.

To cheer myself up, I looked over my updated profile first.

The king and queen had been tier five monsters and were originally a prince and princess, according to the mermen's profile. Both of them had also picked up the abyssal mutation, likely before becoming king and queen, as it looked like it was a "final" mutation, just like my own.

On the positive side, it looks like kings and queens don't just naturally spawn, so I've set them back dramatically. When future mermen spawn, they will have a long road ahead of them. It's no wonder I'm marked for death by them.

As for the abilities of the royal mermen, honestly, I was a little disappointed as the vast majority of them were to buff their underlings, which I notably lacked.

The saving grace of the profile was [Dominating Echo], which was the direct upgrade of [Disrupting Echo]. Not only did it have the far more oppressive effect, but also the sub-ability to grant servants and subjects immunity to the effect.

Would Vee count? She's not really my servant, and I wouldn't want to see her that way.

It was open to interpretation, and I wasn't sure how strict the wording in the description was. Considering I'd lose most of its potency by being away from the ocean, I didn't really feel it was something to add to my standard repertoire.

Oh, I also have the siren update!

This was where I got some answers. [Beguile] was their unique trait, and it caused the [Allured] condition, which could be progressively increased over time. It wasn't mind control, but it was potentially more insidious, as the victim wanted it to happen.

Also, while it wasn't a trait, I discovered more about what this whole "pearl" thing was supposed to be by reading the profile a bit more. It was something they could only do once in their lifetime, and it was supposed to be ingested by their chosen one, forming a sort of reverse-bond between them.

If not for the whole [Beguile] thing before that, I'd almost say it was kind of weirdly romantic?

I shrugged, and with that behind me, I looked at the far more critical notifications—my levels and points! I skipped over most of it, only singling out the final levels I'd gained in my race and class.

<Racial Experience threshold reached. Chimeric Cluster Slime (Prismatic) is now LV 5.>

<20 Trait Points are now available.>

<Class Experience threshold reached. Elementalist is now LV 31.>

<15 Skill Points are now available.>

I had overshot my goal of level thirty, which was slightly annoying. I would have preferred a nice round number for my level, but at least I gained another skill point out of it.

I quickly changed my experience distribution to my race, maximizing it, since I wanted no further levels in Elementalist, and, with the mermen constantly coming out of the woodwork to fight me, it was a real possibility. Especially since this wasn't limited to just the mermen, even their minions were coming after me as one of those massive whales came straight for me.

After defeating the whale and claiming the crystalline structure in its mouth for myself, the only thing really left was to check what I'd gained for my major Elementalist milestone. Mother had even gone out of her way to hint that I wouldn't want to miss it, so my anticipation was palpable as I looked for it among the mess of notifications.

<Your class has revealed the following skill: [Chaos Elements].>

What the heck is a chaos element?

Comments

lol! When the king mentioned he'd have died if Syl had hit him with the accumulated lightning, I was wondering if Syl had done that in fear of completely obliterating him and leaving nothing to eat. Turns out Syl was just playing with its food and hadn't even thought of that risk.

Zorgdub

Thank you for the chapter!

Jamie Mann

Syl is going to get some sweet sweet magic.

Lonnie

Eh, plaid is faster and funnier

Jason Garrett

Or shapeshift into her guild reception form and taunt her how she fell for a shape shifter

enderman

If Syl doesn't absolutely mess with Vanessa I'll be sad... Just picture pretending to be trapped in the slime as it engulfs her... Almost like a lantern fishes lure.

Alexander Andrews

Maybe it's just my dirty mind, but I thought "forming a pearl" sounded vaguely erotic. Like it was going to be formed from some sort of secretions. After all, that's pretty much how natural pearls are formed. Doesn't help that "pearl" is also a euphemism.

Jason Hardman

My MGQ brain immediately jumped to assuming chaos elements are like normal elements but they bypass resistances. I'm curious to see the actual result

Vorthod Wiler

Really wanna see the drama when Vanessa confronts her.

Summer Coff

The royal profile was the same king or queen.

Chloe Root

Thanks for the chapter

Michael Zinkstein

Thanks for the chapter!

Bosparan

Tank oo fur da chap!

Engineer4God

Probybly not, since no corps was left behind, but it sounds like it has overlapping benefits with the queen, so she didn't really miss out on much

Tsorov

Did she get a profile for the Mer King?

Gardor

I don't think they can control the evolution madness but the souls can redirect it to something else

Azurite Paladin

The answer to that last question is, you are syl. Lol

chaz mars

One thing I think people forget about Syl is that the soul that inhabits the slime body was improperly cleansed of her past life, it's why she has the prodigy trait. The gods of this world are clearly imperfect. It's entirely possible that Gramps forgot to properly cleanse the slime body of the evolution madness.

Jack Dawson

Thank you for the chapter! Eagerly awaiting the next!

Heck yeah! 👍🏼😁👍🏼 Tyftc 🍻

I think the attraction to Syl would override the rage thing.

phantom

She accidentally vaporized the king? That sounds way too careless when this is a profile she may never see again. Also trait points are way more valuable than skill points. Using them on skill points at those prices is a rip off. You can level multiple classes. you only have the one race to level up. and aside scarcity traits are stronger.

Plateworm

Legend points are awesome, and makes sense you can’t just get them willy nilly. I wonder if you could do something special with 10 of them? Also chaos element sounds like a crazy time.

Lionheart Copperhead

“You have been marked, and the last remnants of the species will seek to destroy. They will be able to sense your current location, regardless of the distance, and seek you out. Should you survive this ordeal and defeat the last remnants, you shall be awarded a Legend Point.” > Awww, I was hoping that Vanessa would get a redemption arc. Maybe she still will but it’s not looking too likely now. :( Thanks for the chapter!

CringeWorthyStudios

Syl's how old by now? A year? I wonder if it's possible to become branch head by default through the death of every other elf in the branch. But I suspect that isn't the case or it would already have happened. Or maybe it doesn't count for the purpose of getting this achievement. In any case, nobody will ever get that achievement again now.

JAndy

I'm going to bet that Vanessa was missing for the whole ordeal and will become a thorn in Syl's side.

JAndy

Chaos! Chaos! Chaos! Not exactly something that's in short supply for Syl anyway but now she's got permission to go really ridiculous. Yay!

Sparifankerl

Nooooooooo! The wait to find out what [Chaos Elements] is!

Ben Bailey

'The pure raw energy on display was like a lightning god had been summoned, and nobody was safe from its wrath—well, except for me, of course!' >:D 'You have destroyed a major stronghold of an advanced monster species. This will impact the world.' Uhh 'Youngest Elven [Branch Head] in history.' AHAHA 'Your class has revealed the following skill: [Chaos Elements].' OH NO. WITH A MANA JUMPED PRISMATIC SLIME? Thank you for the chapter :D

Napalm078

Idk why, but the word "ludicrous" is inherently funny to me. I'm going to blame having watched Spaceballs as a teen.

JAndy

Whatever chaos elements are, she is probably going to find some way to break it and make herself even more OP. It's funny how Gramps ended up making the perfect magic disciple that Mother would've wanted as hers. Not that Syl neglects her slime evolution and traits but still, Syl is out here brute force creating new elemental afflictions with the most basic mana manipulation, lol.

Disgusting Weeb

Mermen and humanity are simply incompatible. Even if they are not strictly evil, the fact is a culture based on mind control and slavery cannot coexist with the society they kidnap slaves from.

Wensber

CHAOS! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Daniel Mountain

Thanks for the chapter!

Kasamuri

I’m a little late to the party, just finished all the saved up chapters. I gotta say it’s a little insane that Syl just wiped out a full race of sentient creatures. Just single handedly performed genocide on a group of people that guaranteed had innocents living there and children. Feels very murder hobo, and a bit out of character. The real reason all the previous comments are so pro genocide here, isn’t because Syl is morally right, or any facts. It’s all just meta writing and cognitive dissonance. The very first merfolk were introduced to, tries to enslave the MC. It’s then that explained that they routinely enslave others. Our entire belief about a, probably diverse, people, and whether they ALL deserve genocide is based on this one encounter. The next few we meet are all cartoonishly selfish nobility who take advantage of Sylvain. It’s so naive to believe every single merfolk are all evil. Then when the bombs go off, the innocents die off screen. It’s all anchoring effect and cognitive bias. If our first introduction to the merfolk was an architect struggling to survive in the caste system he was born into, you’d have empathy for them. If when Syl destroyed the dome, you got to see a mother holding her daughter as her lungs collapsed inside her chest and her eyes popped out of her skull from the pressure, and she slowly loses consciousness and drowns, you’d all be sick to your stomach. Because this is how our brains work. It’s all convenient writing to conveniently and guilt free kill off an entire race and wrap up this arc and plot thread while giving our MC sweet, sweet experience. WHICH I AM NOT AGAINST. This type of writing sleight of hand is necessary to some degree in order to to write a story. They’re fictions. And we need some groups to be bad, and others good. But this just seems so extreme and a little lazy to be honest. If disagree you can read my points below. If you think these people deserved to die, then did the goblins Syl lived with deserve to die?
