Late on this but a feature of all my holiday memories from when I was a kid is the big stock pot we would fill with apple cider, cinnamon bark, cloves, and orange slices and leave sitting on the wood stove. Not a hard recipe, but just having it sitting there all the time and constantly refilling it as it got low meant the house always smelled of spices and it was guaranteed there would always be something warm to drink when you got home.
