Today's Live Chat - What Genre Could You Appreciate More?

Hey all, Kirk here,

I wanted to preface today's live chat topic with something fairly interesting.  We're looking at rebuilding the Music Appreciation course, and adding additional modules revolving around very specific genre related content.  We'd love to discuss with you your favorite music genre, why, and what about it other people don't get or understand.

For instance: Why grunge? People find Kurt Cobains voice, Eddie Vedder's voice, etc. grating to their ears.  So what are those people missing?

This could be a super interesting and fun topic. Hope to see many of you there!

Best,
Kirk

That was a fun and very interesting chat. Lots of neat comments and ideas. I think I may have given Elizabeth something to check out PMJ/Allison Young's rendition of Mr. Blue Sky. Hope so, it's trippy. I have to admit like others, I really don't do "Genre" as I enjoy what ever supports the mood I'm in. Growing up, as I may have been angry, I'd get loud, fast music to burn off the anger. Typically, I enjoy a great deal of instrumental music - movie stuff and 2 Steps From Hell or audiomachine for "Movie-like" music. Exposure to the many people I see/hear on chat broadens my tastes manyfold. Awesome Friday today! Have a great weekend, All!

English translation of what I tried to convey during the meeting, plus a few more words: Favorite genres (I think?): musical theater, piano ballads, soft rock => I actually don’t really care about genres. I care about specific artists (voice, performance, personality). And I do like genre-spanning artists. Genre I’d like to better appreciate: Jazz (it tends to bore me, but then if it’s Eva Cassidy singing, I’m in love… back to the previous point!). I know I am missing out though. Possible ‘music appreciation’ topic: - I know very little about music. I mostly appreciate it as a ‘gut feeling’. Some artists do make me ‘vibrate’ a LOT though (it all started with Liza Minnelli, to a large extent). And I care about them. Notably the ones I am a patron of. - Having been a patron of indie artists for a while, I started to realize that I am totally missing out on layers and layers of ‘stuff’ that goes in a really great song/performance. This is frustrating. - Maybe I would more deeply appreciate music if I could better understand the sausage making, from the intertwined creation of lyrics and melody, from a demo to a more refined product, from a simple acoustic rendition to a multi-layer ‘produced’ version, from a song to a full-blown performance and/or video, etc. - I do understand there are MANY ways to skin this cat, but taking a few examples of such creation process and all the things involved in the final product would be very enlightening. - Yeah, ok, you may need a better course title than ‘sausage making’… ;-)

Blues rock. The voices of David Coverdale and Robert Plant are known for high pitch wailing but when they turn to the blues, they have so many interesting things to listen to. Multifaceted performances with power and subtly together.

Going to try but I don’t get off work until 5pm EDT I love Rock n’roll, Grunge, Post Grunge, and Nu Metal — I would love to see some analysis of some of those singers such as Austin John Winkler formerly of Hinder, Scott from Creed, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Candlebox — and many many more, these types of music often get overlooked due to thoughts of the singers being “lazy” singers, “lack of depth,” “all the songs sound the same” Additionally, would love some analysis of Reba McIntire, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill
