I guess a lot of it also gets defined by how you see yourself as a parent as there is a lot of variance. Personally I aim for my overall role being not to protect my kids from the world but to prepare them for it. Yeah I’m always hesitant to point toward specific people because most people at some point have written something contentious in the science field. I don’t have much experience of Haidt (I probably should have clarified that further in the video) but I did recall being interested in some of his thoughts about phones and resonating with me (especially the critical side) but I haven’t revisited it in what’s probably years now. Out of interest what’s the issue with the previous book? Genuinely interested so I can keep it on mind. Feel free to DM.

It seems obvious in retrospect, but had never thought in quite those terms to run toward the explicit conversation on the differences rather than run away. I’m familiar with Haidt, and have been trying to process his book for awhile—I tend to find the critiques of it more convincing than his defenses… but it’s also hard to deny that there’s SOMEthing troubling there. (I also have major objections to one of his earlier books, so, am trying not to let that color my views.) Understandable to have an issue here with how what’s on screen might class with other impressions from real life—in addition to it being generally hard to tease out, Sorkin has always made clear that choosing between reality and what he thinks is better story… he’ll always choose the latter.
