He said: "Cupbearer is someone who pours wine into the goblet of a king or high noble (like an archbishop, duke, etc). But in medieval Europe it was in fact a honorable title and a purely representative/ceremonial job. It's not to be confused with a waiter or servant, but rather a job and title that a noble will be honored to do. That's why Tyrion could easily say it's a honor, and it confused Joffrey because Joffrey despises everyone beneath him, probably."
