Had a bit of fun with this one. Mostly used this as an exercise to find my style in this new digital environment as well as practicing painting backgrounds which I normally do not do.
1. Simple sketch. Very messy. Used a generic pen tool.
2. Started with quick line art, then added flats. The line art looked a little plain, so I tried adding the sketch layer back to the outline. I think It turned out pretty nice! Generic pen once again.
3. Shading and highlight layer. Normally do those on different layers but I felt pretty comfortable skipping a step for this redraw since it's not super serious. Still going with the pen tool. I wanted to spice it up from the original by giving her a slight backlit feel as well as a dusky tone for the shading. I'm sure I could improve it but given my current skill level I'm pretty satisfied.
4. And finally the background, all done on one layer. Thick brush tool used to blotch things out, vaguely smoothed out with a blender, and finally used the pen tool for the stars, and to give the tree some detail and the mountain an extra defined silhouette.
