Patreon Pick Poll (Pick 4 Movies)
Added 2024-12-10 07:40:15 +0000 UTCHello Everyone,
Here are the films for the next poll based on engagement of the previous discussion.
FYI. Stef has watched the Avatar films, and SuperBad.
There were a lot of war movie suggestions, and they got a lot of engagement. For now I'm going to pick the two I saw get the most likes. I'm sure we will get to all of them over time. This is in the hopes of having a poll with a bit of diversity in it. We will try to get through all of these asap so we can get more films up soon.

Heat (1995) is next it appears? It is a pretty beloved movie. I haven’t seen it in a long time now. I remember it being good though. Will be fun to then get a new poll.

2024-12-22 05:05:06 +0000 UTCThe Pearl Harbor film she should just skip, yeah. It is just not worth seeing.

2024-12-21 03:48:16 +0000 UTCJust to add one more thing. I would really not waste a minute of your time on the Pearl Harbor movie. It is so bad it is almost unbelievable how terrible it is, frankly.

2024-12-21 01:50:29 +0000 UTCI can see that Fury came in first. Fury is not bad. It would not have been my first choice for her that way out of Second World War films, but it is worth seeing. As stated, I think that she should definitely see La La Land and Master and Commander. I really liked La La Land and was really touched by it. I look forward to her seeing it and reacting to it. Master and Commander I would put in my top twenty films ever made and is just a masterpiece imo. For the fourth suggestion, I would recommend her choice between Lion, The Pianist and Schindler’s List. The latter two are not easy, but really should be seen as they are as good as it gets. There are other really good movies. I thought that One Life, on the Kindertransport for Czechoslovakia was really good, for instance, but I would recommend one of either Schindler’s List and/or The Pianist as the top recommendations for her and then if she really wanted more, more could then be provided. I have not yet seen Whiplash, but I heard that it was pretty good. 🙂

2024-12-19 21:15:02 +0000 UTC2nd SS Panzer Division was not equipped with any Tigers, as depicted in the film. They had had Tigers attached to the division while fighting in the Soviet Union in ‘43, but had received their armor complement in France in May consisting of 37 Panzer IV’s, 55 Panther’s and 30 Stug III Assault Guns, but it is still a really great movie in many ways and everyone should certainly see it, for sure.

2024-12-19 21:07:33 +0000 UTCIt is too bad that Lion has not been making these lists. Would be one of my one of my top choices for her. I really am pretty confident in it, as well, in terms of her liking it. So beautiful and powerful. As stated elsewhere, as well, I really do think that she should see The Pianist and/or Schindler’s List. I would probably recommend The Pianist simply on the basis that there appear to be fewer reactions to it, but they are both extraordinary.

2024-12-19 20:58:21 +0000 UTCI just saw La La Land for the first time recently. I would really highly recommend it. It is just a great and beautiful movie. Master and Commander is one of my all-time favorite movies, as I have noted many times before. Would make for a great selection.

2024-12-19 20:49:24 +0000 UTC@Havits, From Here to Eternity (1953) has some of the elements which I think you are going for with Pearl Harbor in a much, much better movie. It won Best Picture for 1953 and is really gorgeous. For the actual attack on Pearl Harbor specifically, Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), despite its flaws, is much better overall than the Pearl Harbor film. However, in terms of some of the personal connection and that which I think you are getting at, while still retaining the Pearl Harbor backdrop in terms of being stationed at Pearl, as noted above, I would recommend swapping out the Pearl Harbor film with From Here to Eternity which is a much superior movie. I have some problems with it in places, but it is light years better than Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor film does have some amazing shots in it, even if the movie is not accurate at all and is written very poorly (in my view). I agree that providing variety amongst really good movies is great. That is something which I am definitely cognizant of. Among war movies, Braveheart would not have been one of my top selections for her, but that is fine. I am not saying that it is bad, per se. It just is very violent and may not have quite as much to attach to as some other options and so it might not have been my absolute first choice for her, but, again, that is fine.

2024-12-19 20:46:58 +0000 UTCI suggested Ready Player One. It got more likes than Pearl Harbor and it didn't make the list. Stef would have enjoyed it. But oh well, maybe next time.

2024-12-13 04:38:16 +0000 UTCI agree. To be honest, none of these movies inspire me. With the entire history of movies to choose from, this is a pretty mid list.

2024-12-10 18:14:19 +0000 UTCSaving Private Ryan is not just "a film" it is a one of a kind movie experience. In my humble opinion it beats out all the films on this list. And to be honest, I believe that a reactor should watch the film that gets the most reactions from that reactor. Certainly with Stef, Saving Private Ryan would do this.

2024-12-10 17:51:23 +0000 UTCHavits: Speaking as someone that's a HUGE history buff himself, Let's not get so bent out of shape about which war film is getting put up. Saving Private Ryan is a pretty heavy film in the way Hacksaw was so I opted to give her something that was more than just a war heavy. We aren't picking films based on "Historical Accuracy" , I'm trying to mix it up with these films to give Stef a good experience.

2024-12-10 10:25:32 +0000 UTCAs a combat veteran, I would agree with you on this. Survivors and veterans of the attacks on Pearl Harbor found the film extremely distasteful. A pilot who survived named Kenneth Taylor, who was also portrayed in the film, described the movie as, “a piece of trash; over-sensationalized and completely distorted.”
