Great reaction! (Man you really went on a rollercoaster ride on this one.) So much to cover, but my main points are : great use of soundtrack (not intrusive) both score and songs, the jokes are actually funny, a lot of characters but everyone gets their time to shine, great voice acting, when miles gets bitten his thoughts are captions (like a comic), the art direction was amazing (notice the Ben day dot effect that look like old comic book printing processes?), they really boiled the essence of Spider-Man down (he’s a tragic figure who doesn’t quit and just wants to help people). At the time it was the best interpretation of Spider-Man in film/tv/animation EVER. I think it still is. Spidey is the best superhero and this movie really did him right. The sequel is also very very good for a lot of the same reasons. Can’t wait for that reaction video!

It’s a deep cut. In the regular Marvel Universe, Otto Octavius proposed to May Parker and was about to become Pete’s Uncle until Doc Ock’s ulterior motives (related to May’s possible inheritance) were revealed. One can assume in Miles’ universe they were at least acquainted as May calls her Liv and earlier in the film Olivia says her friends call her that.

I think I would say, respectfully, that you can take your time to get to the next film. It’s great, but the third film in the trilogy doesn’t come out for at least another 18 months.

No one else said it, so here’s some trivia for you, especially for your rewatches: 1. The animation is truly spectacular, and was one of the ambitious pieces of animation out there. Some characters (especially, Penni, but also Miles when he was learning his power) at 12 frames per second, instead of the standard 24. That is a throwback to older hand-drawn animation, but also makes Miles as he’s learning his powers feel off, but once he embraces them, he’s animated at 24 fps. The animation was also done mostly without the commonly used motion blur in computer animation to make it feel more like a comic. Each home universe also has its own style to it, like Gwen’s being like a watercolor (remember that for the next movie!). 2. A lot of people don’t notice it until they rewatch, but the logos and titles at the start are glitching like the characters when they are out of universe. 3. Every time they play back that the collider explodes, you can actually see all five alternate Spider-People shooting out of it, even though we generally just focus in on one. 4. Famous voices. Someone else mentioned that Nicolas Cage was Spider Man Noir. Other actors/actresses/filmmakers: John Mulaney was Spider-Ham; Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen/Spider-Woman; Chris Pine was Peter Parker from Miles’ dimension who died; But the one most relevant to you right now… Kathryn Hahn was “Liv” Doc Ock…you know her as the next-door neighbor Agnes on WandaVision! 4a. One Cameo…after the first scene at the Super Collider, there’s a bunch of people looking at a light pole that’s collected a ton of junk on it from the alternate universes, and someone says “I think it’s a Banksy.” That’s Post Malone’s voice, of course the singer of “Sunflower”. 5. Watch the ads: Especially whenever there’s a shot in Times Square, look at the ads. The writers have developed specific aspects in each universe that are similar to each other (and ours), but not exact. Like the Seth Rogan movie “Hold Your Horses” that only Miles gets to see. (Filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are irl friends with Rogan, noted that “Hold Your Horses” is actually a sequel!). When Peter B. Parker is in his universe, he has Coca Cola, but Miles’ universe has “Kona-Soda”. Also, Miles’ universe’s New York police are the “PDNY”, instead of “NYPD”. 6. Please watch the sequel for the channel soon! It’s one of the few sequels that rivals the original.

“Uncle Aaron” actually has a brief appearance in the MCU. He’s Donald Glover’s character in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the criminal who Tom Holland tries to interrogate who sends him to the ferry. Aaron says he is unhappy about the super weapons being sold because he “has a nephew in these parts.”

Always took it as May and Liv were friends until she became Doc Ock and spiderman tore them apart. Really subtle, but brilliant imo writing.

Hey Stef! Great reaction as usual! 1. Unless you follow and read the comics, there is no way you would have known that there are many many Spider-man (people). Marvel/Sony did a great job exploring this in the movie. 2. Btw, Spider-man and related characters (like Venom) are technically not part of the MCU as Sony owns the film rights. So Tom Holland's MCU Spider-man has be "lent" to Marvel. Therefore all these Spider-people from other dimensions also are not part of the MCU. 2. Did you not recognize the voice of the Noir Spiderman? Nicolas Cage!

Howie

I know this is a new reaction but we should definitely do a movie night for this and the sequel. Soooo goooooood.

WillfulCobra

I was making plans to get up and change the stupid battery on mine after I finished with this reaction. I am glad I saw this comment so I didn’t get up for nothing.

Calbert

This was a great reaction. It’s a great movie. It was everything it needed to be. The only thing you missed was that there is an end credit scene. I’d recommend checking it out.

Calbert

Favorite part: when Peter meets Doc Ock, she says her friends call her "Liv", but her enemies call her "Doc Ock". When Doc Ock comes into aunt May's house, aunt May says, "oh great, it's Liv". What is the back story to that line? Oh oh. You missed the end credit scene.

DarthChef

I hope you don't take offense to this but I always find it funny how often you get confused in your reactions haha

Jepi

omg never clicked play so fast

Brandon Tomlin

The next spiderverse movie is legit one of my fav movies of all time, can’t wait!!!!

Alex Ocean

Steph cosplaying as Spider Gwen for Halloween? Hell yeah!

Alex Ocean

Ok I think someone's smoke detector needs a new battery. It's either Stef's or mine.

Mawk

Interesting you didn’t mention the animation. That was a big factor for me

SegwayKid55

I thought Braveheart was next? I swear it's been like 4 months since we voted for that reaction

Corey

Whoa!! Had no idea this was coming! Can't wait to see what you think about this movie, I think both of the Spider-Verse movies are amazing, even better than some of the live action movies. Thanks Stef!!

Cbt87

Wow! Wasn’t expecting this but I am so glad you get to watch this movie. Such a good movie to start off and the second one is really good as well. I think the third one is coming out next year.
