Gladiator Remastered Extended Watch-Along

Comments

Troy is a much lighter and less serious movie than Gladiator, though.

Nathan Towne

Here is the deleted scene which I was referring to. It is about one minute long. The music in the YouTube video was added and is not part of the scene. That was the entire scene. There is an article explaining why the scene was cut. I can’t confirm how accurate it is, but I will link it below, as well. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i7dAbzKVZ0M&t=20s&pp=ygUdZ2xhZGlhdG9yIGxpb24gZGVsZXRlZCBzY2VuZSA%3D Article can be found here: https://screenrant.com/gladiator-cut-lion-scene-ridley-scott/

Great reaction. There isn’t a tremendous difference between this version and the theatrical version. It is slightly over fifteen minutes longer. Most of the scenes which were cut were not really necessary, but there are several which I think improve the film, particularly the additional scene with Lucilla meeting with Gracchus and Gaius and the scene with Commodus in the basement in which he attacks and then hugs his father’s marble bust. The scene in which Commodus is present as he has the two men of the Praetorian Guard killed was also cut, but for me, it isn’t really an essential scene. The short backstory for the man who urinates out of fear prior to entering the ring in Zuccabar was also cut. Only the backstory scene for him was cut and the movie is fine without it, I think. There is actually at least one short deleted scene which didn’t make it into the Extended Release, but was contained on the original DVD as a deleted scene. It basically has Maximus looking through a viewing opening from the dungeon underneath the Colosseum and seeing a young boy and his parent in the arena (obviously Christian) who were about to be fed to lions (which was a common method of persecution of Christians in Ancient Rome). However, this was already implied with the earlier shots in the movie in Zuccabar which showed the Christians in the pen and the lions being fed in their cages. I don’t believe that there is much more additional footage (at least finished footage) beyond that though which is not contained here. As stated though, the versions are pretty close overall. There isn’t really all that much narrative difference. Extremely powerful film! It tells basically a fictional story, like a novel would, set in Ancient Rome. It is just done so brilliantly, though!

My all-time favorite film. The one that made me become a screenwriter. Pumped for this reaction!

Cool, to see you had a Gladiator stream to get answer/perspectives on some of your questions. Since Im sure we will vote more Historical movies, I suggest you check the YT channel History Buffs. This channel look into the Historical authenticity of such movies, and Im sure more of the movies they covered. You will watch at some point :) Anyway Gladiator is one of their first movies covered, so there you will learn alot, have a nice day! Looking forward to watch Interstellar with you :)

And now you know why we wanted you to see this movie :) not only it is a good action movie but it is also so much more and unexpectedly very moving and emotional. One of the best movies of all time. I like your worrying poses, one where you have your palms at the side of your face and the "praying nun" pose :D this in not to criticize or to make fun, I just find it adorable and I feel it is a good implication that you are getting into a movie and enjoying it :) Every time I see this movie I start wondering what it would feel to travel back in time and see in person a gladiator match to death. To see 2 man fight to death while 50 000 people boo or cheer them! I don't like seeing people or animals getting hurt so how would it feel to watch that, one the man being doomed to die at the hands of the other one, would it make me anxious, fearful, excited, sick or could I actually even watch it happen at all. I think it would be one of the most powerful experiences possible and would leave any of us used to modern times shaking for hours after the fact. For someone to die for the entertainment of others, its such an absurd concept. Not a possibility but I like to strain my brain thinking about it, it is such an interesting thought experiment. Also I recommend to read about the real life Commodus, this movie showed about 10% of the bastard he was in real life.

I’ve always love gladiator just as much as I loved Troy they are both just really good movies that were so well done and the fact that your reaction makes the emotional aspect feel so much more real for someone like myself who lacks the understanding of how to tap into those emotions I appreciate you stef stef thank you for all your reactions and I’m proud of you.

Jeremy Coleman

What an amazing movie and it's emotionally riveting. It was fun seeing your reaction!

Good job mentioning this was the remastered edition. Was going to be my next suggestion (to include clearly in the name/description which version it is) and to use (where possible) extended editions, directors cuts, etc. (on some movies there might be discussion which version is better mind you).

Hans Engelen

I just finished it with you! The last 5 minutes always get me to the core. I think one of the most powerful scenes is Maximus being carried out of the area with those that loved and respected him while Commodus' body is left in the area with no one.

I've only seen theatrical version, this version I hadn't seen before. Pacing wise, I do like the theatrical version. Incredible film, either version. Another great period piece from Ridley Scott, Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) - Hope you get to react to that one at some point.

Scott S

Real life Commodus was also a delusional psychopath

Tim Wong

Had trouble finding the extended version ngl xD
