Irritability and hopelessness are also symptoms of depression and grief. Hopelessness can then impact your perception on yourself, others, and the world. Add substance abuse to the mix along with another family member dying while he was still at his lowest and it's not surprising that his relationship with others and communication was negatively impacted (like with his children). It takes a lot of willpower to get out of that headspace and change his behavior, so I respect the dad for taking accountability. Does this justify his actions and the hurt he caused to others? No, but in a world where many men are not taught how to healthily express their emotions, I think I try to take a step back and look at the picture as a whole. Again, doesn't mean how he treated others was right and he definitely has his work cut out for him. Love your reactions!
