Also, if you haven't finished the game yet, you should definitely try using the hobby horse more now that you've upgraded it some; I think that allows you to do longer/faster combos with it, which makes it feel much better to use. I don't think I liked it much either until I had a few upgrades, at which point I basically did a 180 and started doing all my melee damage with the hobby horse. It's a really fun weapon imo :)
