It's not uncommon to not know what would be the most fun for itself. It can feel very good overcoming a very hard challenge. Dark souls is an example. But if you struggle and know you could just rewind to proceed... - the fact that you know it is possible to not work so hard for it will linger in your head and take the fun out of doing it the hard way.
What i'm trying to say is that I believe Mapo would have just as much fun if rewinding or making save states simple wasn't possible. But since it IS possible, not using them might feel less fun.

I for one am a big fan of save states and the rewind function.
I'm just passing through.
Minding my own business.
I don't want to watch a man walk around in the woods a hundred times because he didn't go and get the one specific McGuffin that would make his exploration of a forest of madness 5% easier.
A happy Mapo is an entertaining Mapo.
Let the man rewind!

Fun fact: The building north in dark world village without any entrances is actually the top floor of the dungeon - with the three rooms. You can see the shape is the same.
Glad you finally got the net! Also nice to see you try everything on that weird thing underground - though you do need something else. I might drop a hint written backwards eventually if you don't find it, but it is an item you could have gotten already. Also the reward for figuring it out is very good.
I agree on the save state thing the other here says. I watched Lil Indigestion play the game blind and without abusing save state. He is a less experienced player than you and struggled very much, but by being forced to "git good" he actually became good. However I think the best middle-ground if you personally are impatient would be to implement self-imposing rules on when you are allowed to use it.
I've myself have been working with game development in the past, and would hate it if someone could rewind or save-abuse a game i designed for being played a certain way. If I ever gets to it again, I would implement some kind of time check each frame in my games, if it detected a mismatch I would display a message that simple said "Nope." and send the player back to the title screen!
