In the original Wind Waker on Gamcube, the sharks knocked you out of the boat when they hit you, making them more dangerous. Don't get why they nerfed it here. How early or late to explore is a balancing act. While you can access more later, you also get less time to utilize the rewards (like the upgraded wallet). You are doing good now. The is no harm in opening all the treasure maps you have to get the locations. You don't have to actually pick up the treasure yet. I do however find it strange that maps that are something else than treasure map, and reads "This map has not been opened yet" does not peak your curiosity.
