Ah, so happy to see the companion missions! I like your reasoning for that mission. Cole is a spirit that has taken on the appearance of the Real Cole (Like the spirit taking on the image of the Divine), not possessed his body, so he does not have the abilities of a mage. You can ask Cole for more details I'm pretty sure!

I think Varric's choice is more narrow-minded and kind of suggest he'd have more value as a "physical person" rather than a "spirit-person". He is a spirit of compassion. Making him more human is making him unlike himself. I feel that although he jumped over and became 'Cole', he didn't do it because he wanted to BE human, he did it because his nature and wish to help drove him to it. A side effect, if you will, as the world side of the Veil requires more.. permanence. Like Command in Crestwood couldn't move on because the world didn't work as it wanted and was used to.
