So Long London is The song on the album for me, and already one of my all time favorites of hers. Feel similar to you, how it was the first song where she really FELT what she was saying. Also, this is YOUR video. If you want to listen to a song two times back to back then do it. I did it with both “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” and “Down Bad.” If people don’t like it, they can fast forward through it 🤷🏼‍♀️ I get what you’re saying about how the cursing can kind of lower the quality of songwriting, especially Taylor’s, but for some reason I love it in “Down Bad.” You should listen to the clean version because it actually takes on a different meaning. She changes the lyrics to “What if I can’t have him?” and “What if I can’t have us?” I found that interesting.

I completely agree with you about “Fortnight” sounding sonically like it should be further down the tracklist. It sounds nice, but I could see “The Tortured Poets Department” more as the intro. However, I think Taylor made “Fortnight” the intro as a false sense of what we expected the album to sound like and then she just tossed us into this crazy, but amazing mix of songs. Lol.

Definitely! I would say though that evermore captures a mix of red/fearless, midnights a mix of 1989/speak now and ttpd a mix of debut/reputation. So the album that comes before a set of rerecordings is guided/inspired by them.

Totally. Upon first listen, I wasn’t just slightly disappointed, I actually felt kind of numb to the whole album. Nothing particularly stood out to me and nothing emotionally resonated in a particularly deep way. …After a couple of revisits, I now can feel some of these songs in my bones. It’s definitely one of her absolute best and the definition of a grower.

This album didn’t really land for me, unfortunately. I’ve listened to it a handful of times and still, the emotions don’t click for me. As someone who is a huge folklore and evermore enjoyer, something about this album just made me feel like I was listening to some unedited diary entries over some synth pop beats. A few of the songs grew on me, like guilty as sin and some of the anthology tracks. But I don’t find myself wanting to play any of the album in my spare time. Maybe I expected more from an album called what this is called, but some of lyrics seem a little juvenile and vapid. Especially for a songwriter of her caliber. Or maybe I’m just being over critical. I can be self aware enough to know that my opinion of her has been a bit clouded since her tryst with the racist guy (the rebound most of the album is about) but I’d also like to think I know how to be objective. But something about her being mad at everyone for being against the relationship with a VERY problematic person rubs me in all the wrong ways. Anyway, now I’m just rambling. But I hope you have a better time with the anthology! I did. And thank you for taking the time to make these reviews. I’ve only now recently joined the Patreon but I’ve always been a fan of your stuff on YouTube. Thank you again, I know it takes time to do all of this! :)

It took me three listens straight through to really appreciate this album. Each time, I heard new things and grew to love some songs I had originally been lukewarm about. Oh Ajay they did you dirty!! This album has many layers several layers at least. They did not tell you, and at bare minimum. Most of the breakup songs are about her very short romance with Matty Healy. Front man of the 1979 which is important and relevant given the sonic elements of this record. Also, one of the Swifties did a deep dive on this particular song Fortnite and discovered a lot of parallels with Sylvia Plath and her relationship, which makes a lot of the lyrics make more sense. I think you would really enjoy the music video for this because it helps make sense of the song lyrically.

I hear you, despite that I love this album personally. This is even better than Midnights, in my opinion but like they said, to each their own. But I agree that she should take a break because I'm genuinely concerned about her health lol. But kidding aside, I also agree that she needs to collaborate with the other producers as well. As much as I love her new sound, I kinda miss her creating bangers. But whatever she does, I'm still here for it. I hope you'd still give a chance on TTPD. The album has only two producers: Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner Jack is with her since 1989, and he has been responsible for A LOT of her good pop works, especially reputation, that you liked so much. But his producing can get tiring sometimes. He is the main producer of the first part of the album and Aaron is of the second one, and let me tell you, you will notice an overwhelming difference between them. Aaron came during folklore/evermore era and brought the best of Taylor, lyrically and producing speaking. She has found her place with him. As I could notice you really liked Aaron’s productions on this first part, so you will probably love the second part. He is amazing, and him and Taylor are magical together, we are so happy to have him on her side. 🤍

Honestly, I was scared about your reaction to this since this has gotten so much not good reviews despite the chart-topping records it got. This even divides between the OG Swifties and the ones who just started to love her during The Eras Tour (which btw I hope you'd watch even though this channel is mainly for music reactions but... anything's possible so I hope that someday you'd consider it). They've been expecting some songs here that sound like "Cruel Summer", or "Blank Space", or "Wildest Dreams", like the mainstream-type of songs. But knowing Taylor, she always wants to break out from her comfort zone. Personally, on my initial listen, I immediately loved it as a whole. It's even a lot better than Midnights for me! And of course, the more I listen to it, the more I'm loving it deeply because there's actually so much to admire despite the critiques saying that the production doesn't do much, maybe because of the impression that she worked with the same producer, Jack Antonoff, who's mainly the producer of Midnights and her other past albums basically since 1989. What I love about this album is her new style of writing which she chose to be more bold and fierce, like not holding anything back about what she says. She was MAD AT EVERYONE for questioning her decisions about dating Matty Healy from the band "The 1975" (though he's awesome as an artist), especially us FANS and I gotta say, WE DESERVE IT. 😂 Like the other people who already listened to this album, it's not going to be appreciated on the initial listen which is why it's so understandable that you only loved the 50% of it as of now. But if you listen to it more and more, especially when you love to deep dive, it's going to be absolutely amazing. A revisit someday, perhaps? Though I understand if you wouldn't since 31 songs is not a joke LOL. My favorites off this album so far are Down Bad, But Daddy I Love Him, Guilty As Sin, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, loml, and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. I would still listen to this album without any skips because I love the other songs, though I have top-tiers. Hence, the ones mentioned. I'm so excited for The Anthology reaction and with that... As a massive fan for Taylor, I've listened to the album so many times, and it just doesn't click for me. It's definitely my least favorite album from her. There's a few strong tracks on here, but the rest I find boring, bland and forgettable. That being said, I'm a fan of The Anthology tracks. The Black Dog is easily the best track on the album entire, and a career highlight for me.

I hear you, I really like what Aaron did on part 2. I also think she may be done with real big pop music like those from Max Martin. Also, all her career she was told who to collaborate with until finally 1989 she chose Jack and Max but she was always reallly alone. Now, she has Jack and Aaron and these are her best friends, she is making music with people she loves and who love her. She trusts them. I don’t know, I guess I think she has found this musical family and I think that’s really important to her. Not sure I would love for her to go back to heavy Max Martin pop music. I love the production on this album. Keep in mind, if it wasn’t the sound she wanted, then it wouldn’t be so. She decides, and this is the sound she wants.

Ajay the album is also about matty healy, the 1975 main singer, who she spent some time with after her break up with joe, and so with this album we found out that taylor and matty had a thing since 2014 and even if they dated other people, they always ended up getting back together. Apparently Taylor really wants to get married, and Matty kept giving her some sort of false hope about it, so thats why she talks about it a lot on this album… but they ended up finishing again bc he ghosted her

After Midnights, this album isn’t what I wanted it to be. I was VERY underwhelmed at first, but some of the songs are growing on me. I still also think 31 songs is way too many and she should probably take a decent break from the limelight and making music for at least a good 2 years or more. Just my opinion.

This is one of those albums where on first listen you're very meh about it. It took me a whole weekend and then even the week to really get into the album. Some songs still aren't to my tastes, but I've got a lot more songs I enjoy as opposed to first listen. I think when you initially hear it, it's like an evermore. Personally, I feel evermore is better than folklore, but it took me a bit to get into the album. This is a grower. It's prob in my top 5 of Taylor albums.

Fortnight is basically from the perspective is if she got married to someone else and became neighbors with her ex and she didn't end up as happy as she thought. Her husband was cheating, and her ex's life seems perfect with his wife watering flowers and her being jealous (wanting to kill her).

She hit the nail right on the head, the production isn’t strong enough to carry the lyrics and the vocals aren’t strong enough to carry the production so it leaves you with a great reading experience but a terrible listening one. It’s so funny how London and LOML made an impression on me too way before realizing they were Aaron songs those are so good, everything else is flatlining.

So happy to get your reaction AJ!!! for future reference for personal listens or a revisit down the line (not gonna use names) but for context its actually about so many things how toxic the industry is and how much pain it's caused her over her career in different ways. but its also partly about going from a 6 year dying relationship that was suffocating her despite trying to love him he just never got her or appreciated her and someone from her past comes back (they never gave it a full chance previously) he was promising her so much that she wanted in life and thought this is it but he was a POS and ghosted her after 2 weeks (fortnight) And it wrecked her deeply because because both relationships ended so close together and the 2nd half of the album is her finding a lot more perspective and healing as well as processing more but with a little hindsight. This album is a masterpiece but it can take a min to really hit ❤️

I truly hope you can do a revisit to this album! After my first listen, I was somewhat unimpressed and had the thought that all the songs “sounded the same.” Fast-forward to now and this has become one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) Taylor albums. As a Swiftie, I personally think I was overwhelmed with the album at first, especially with it being a double album. All that to say, I believe this is some of Taylor’s best work and I can’t wait to hear if the album grows on you!

outstanding reaction. this album is a grower. I spend a weekend with it and it is a fave. Maybe there was some context you missed. Let me break it down for you: She met and kinda had a brief fling at 24-ish with Matty Healy, but they were kids, he was an addict, and not the right time, but always wondered about each other. He wrote songs about her. Her relationship with Joe of 6 years was breaking down and started writing Midnights in late 2021 with Jack Antonoff, who was also producing Matty’s next record. So as she was figuring out what to do with her relationship with Joe who wasn’t ready to get married, Matty was feeding her some lines about marriage, kids, how she was the love of his life, and she reformed him, and why are you with that guy, you deserve a brave man, a real man who loves you. He fed her those lines for 18 mos before she was finally was able to end things with Joe (she did her time) she ran to this rekindled flame. And once he had her, he didn’t want her anymore and ghosted her immediately. that’s why she is so mad. She’s over her relationship with Joe, but it was the one she ran to who was feeding her line after line for 18 mos while in the studio until she left Joe. She feels used and from someone she had known for a decade. And, he’s very controversial and says offensive things, so the public hated them together, hated everything and was vocal about it and threatened to boycott her, it was really bad. Anyway, once he had her, he was no longer interested and left her alone and ghosted her. THAT is probably the context you needed going into the album. We all thought it would be mostly about Joe, but there is very little and mostly it is about Matty. So she is angry. She said its the worst men that she writes the best. Also, we don’t really know what happened with either men, but there are strong hints that they both cheated. The next album is different. Themes are different, sonically different, topics are different.

Hi Ajay. Thank you so much for your sharing. Love it so much! I think that this album will grow as we listen a few more times. It sounds “calmer and more religious ” than the previous albums cuz one of the main themes of this album is about tortured moments. Torture drives people crazy and psycho as Taylor has illustrated through lyrics and melodies. The unforgettable moments are haunting as the melodies lingering in our minds. There are only 2 (the alchemy & Clara Bow) that expresses positive emotions. Even ICDIWABH is melodically catchy, the lyrics are very depressed. So I believe as we listen more, the album will prove its worth.

On my first listen, my favorites were Down Bad, loml, and But Daddy I Love Him. After more listens (it was midnight and I was tired), I still love those songs but So Long, London really stands out to me. I had to hear it multiple times to hear everything and now it makes me cry every time. I really like My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, and Guilty as Sin (grew on me a lot - it's so smooth!), and I Can Do it With a Broken Heart, The Alchemy, and Clara Bow. I like Fortnight and TTPD but I keep forgetting about them, so that's not great. I enjoy them in the moment but don't look for them. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived makes me cry. It's not my favorite song, but I definitely like it.

Your reaction to Who's Afraid of Little Old Me was the exact same as mine. I totally get what you mean by it sounds younger and like she's in rep era. I saw a couple things that gave me a different perspective and helped me see it fit more in the album: 1. Taylor said she wrote it one day at the piano when she feeling bitter about what the industry does to its artists. 2. I watched a reaction where the reactors said the song actually sounds like she's telling the people/media in the industry who continue to belittle her, hate her, etc. that she knows that their hate is their mask for how much they actually fear her. Because when she sees things she doesn't like, she changes them (rerecordings). She was raised in the industry and by the media and by all these people, so she knows what they're really doing behind the scenes and that fucking scares them - as it should. It's not just a "you underestimate me but you really should be scared of me" song, which I think would fit more on reputation. It's actually a "you created this and now you are acting innocent in your own doing? you caged me and you're going to call me crazy? come on now - be real. the reason you caged me was BECAUSE you were scared of me from the beginning - that's why you took out all my teeth, that's why you trained me, that's why you did everything in your power to make sure I had NONE - because you've been scared of little old me since I was a 15 year old girl. and even after all your hate and all your bullshit and all your criticism and constant need to keep me caged, I continue to bite back so you are still scared of me now." I love this song because even though I can't relate to the music industry piece, I still feel like this totally captures what it is like to grow up as a girl.

Okay chill a little. No need to be cursing; we can chat like adults. She asked me why I was a former swiftie not just musically but in general, so I answered it. I believe it’s important to take into account what kind of person she is when it comes to a lot of her music because of how personal she makes and markets it. If I’m not connecting with her that way nor musically, mathematically I’m set up hot to like it. Regardless of how relative her carbon footprint is to other celebrities (who I would also hold to a high standard if I did actually like their work), she still is doing irreparable damage in a year that doesn’t even compare to what a single average American like me could ever do in my lifetime. Being a billionaire, to anyone with a basic understanding of sociology and a basic understanding of human compassion, is NOT and will never be ethical. She hoards a lot of her wealth and is only a self-proclaimed activist whenever it benefits her (never when it comes to actual pressing matters). I know enough about her dating life, so much so that unlike you I broke through my bias as a former stan and realized how childish she has been since she’s been frozen at the teenaged age she became famous. Dating someone with well-known problematic history just because she wants to feel like the rebellious girl for once is indeed childish. There are so many metaphors in this album. With the first song, fortnight to me. I interpret this song as one of her fears about the future, that she will have a cheating husband and an unhappy life forced to pretend that it’s fine while her now ex man has a lovely wife and a happy life. Although she pretends to be fine with it, the love she has for that man is “ruining her life”. This album is very dramatic, fatalistic, and deep for interpretation. My first few listens I truly had no clue what the hell was going on, now after a week, it’s simply immaculate for me.

You don't understand how much I love this album. My first reaction was almost like yours, but I looveeed Who's Afraid of Little Old Me on my first listen. She's is coming after industry and HER OWN fans. She can trash us and we still love her. And I understand her completly because some of her fans think that they are her friends. I think that Taylor made this album not about her long term relationship because she still can't understand the heartbreak. She is not allowing herself to feel that much. I think a lot of people needed a few more listens, so it is completely understandable to feel that way at the end. Fresh Out The Slammer grew on me x1000000. Now I have the entire album on repeat. I am excited for you to listen again. I know there are lots of people commenting who each song is about, but I really recommend going in to each song trying not to focus on the "who" inspired it but more so about the feelings described in the song and how you interpret it. A LOT of people have different opinions about who each song is about (and I don't think there is a 100% right answer for either besides maybe a couple select ones - the ones about her current relationship that is :) you 10000% got that right). Some songs could arguably be about multiple people because some people did similar things in different ways. To me, this album is really telling the story of the transition from a relationship where you felt trapped, alone, and like you were constantly questioning whether the other person even really wanted to be with you at all to the rebound chaotic delulu relationship where the polar opposite of your previous partner love bombs you with all the things you were missing from the previous relationship to finally being alone and feeling that pain and realizing you are going to be okay...leading to you letting go of all that heartbreak and opening the door to the person who authentically loves you and appreciates you in all the ways you have been needing (with a couple songs commenting on the problems in the industry and media thrown in as well). Love you, and love your reactions always. Thank you for this <3

Thanks for listening Ajay! Always love your reactions and your takes when an artist drops an album. It's definitely a lot to digest! We expected most of the songs to be about Joe, who Taylor had a 6-year-long relationship with, but many of them are also about her situationship with Matty Healy from the 1975, who many people protested against as he's arguably, trash. This situationship occured shortly after her breakup with Joe, it seems like it was a rebound relationship. Songs like "Down Bad", "But Daddy I Love Him", "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived", "Guilty as Sin?" and "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) are just a couple songs fans believe are about Matty Healy whilst songs like "So Long, London", "loml" and "How Did it End?" to name a few, are believed to be about Joe Alwyn. There are also a couple songs about her current relationship with Travis Kelce. However, Taylor doesn't ever really say or at least confirm who her songs are about, so some of this is fan speculation. Both men are from England which makes analysing the songs a bit tricky too.

I fear nobody really expected the album to actually cover quite a broad range of topics. She does not refer only to her long-term ex-partner but also a situationship she had with another Brit (🐀), and Travis (her current partner). But besides the relationships, she mostly talks about her more abstract relationship with her career, the industry, and fame. This is one of the most unserious and serious albums she has put out. So it takes extra effort to actually see through the veil. She’s being sarcastic and very hyperbolic in some songs. A lot of scenarios she paints are figuratively parallel to her own life and experiences. Some of us expected a lot of super depressing songs (and there are a few in the first half of the album). But, honestly, heartbreak is not linear and neither are emotions. She just had to let it all out. In fact, she left us with a brief description about the album on release day basically saying how she wrote all of these tracks to process her own grief. But now that she’s done she’s left them all to us. She doesn’t want us to apply them to her life, but to take them as our own.

First time being on Patreon for your reaction! As I'm watching the Fortnight reaction I wanted to say, don't get too bogged down in trying to assign each song to a specific person. I've been a Swiftie since 2010 when Speak Now came out, and I really think over the past 5 years Taylor has been experimenting with her diaristic songwriting style. In this album she takes the metaphor-heavy songwriting of Folklore and Evermore and applies it to her life situation while sprinkling in some details. I really think she's trying to find a balance of how much she shares in her music, and when you listen to "But Daddy I Love Him" and the song "How Did It End?" on the Anthology, you can understand why. She's tired of her art being treated like a public autopsy and fans and the media acting like her honest vulnerability in her songwriting gives them the right to act in the way they have been and make the art about her exes rather than about her feelings and emotions that she is exorcising on the page. Fortnight as an opener makes sense when you realize that she is introducing the concept of the album metaphorically. The overarching theme of the album is Taylor ending a 6-year relationship that had been slowly dying for quite some time, and then jumping into a rebound with an old flame who she had always wondered about (and in some ways built up to be a better fit for her than he was) in the back of her mind. That rebound then love-bombed her and crushed her at a time when she was already vulnerable, leaving her reeling and consequently, processing her emotions over the end of the 6-year relationship AND being used by someone who had lied to her about being in it for the long haul and willing to give her the things her 6-year relationship had refused to. Also, she's experiencing all of this while being under intense scrutiny from the public eye while on one of the biggest tours she's ever done. I think with this album more than any other it's important to listen to what she is saying and not worry about who inspired what because I think she has pulled from both experiences for a lot of the album.

my first initial listen I was overwhelmed by the production and lyrics that I didn't know what to concentrate on first! But after listening to the album multiple times and understanding the lyrics, I have to say that this is her best album in my opinion. for both albums this is the most she has been very raw and meaningful in her music for us as fans in a very long time. I feel like this whole album is one of her most unique ones yet! if you think about the lyrics and the tone in her voice at times its very dark and sinister at the same time gut wrenching makes sense now why "tortured" is part of the album title because these thoughts are very deep and hard to keep inside. this album is like reading a series of books and this is like her 11th book and you kinda have to really know what happened from the last book to understand what is going on in her life and the lyrics she is expressing! I'm so glad that this is a double album because the story continues onto the 2nd half and the 2nd half of the double album is very beautiful, raw and truthful! Ajay I'm glad you decided to do 2 separate listening ,because this first half once you understand the heartache, the trust being taken away and the loneliness she goes through can be heavy on a person. I hope you love her 2nd half when we watch your reaction tomorrow, if not that is completely understandable!

The album lived up to its title in a sense that lyrically it’s so raw and honest but melodically and production wise it didn’t feel as “tortured” as I expected compared to like Midnights where you can feel the songs have that midnight vibe. I was expecting some really peircing songs and gut-wrenching melodies to feel the “torture” but honestly the songs started to sound flat and drawn out halfway through the album. Loml is my absolute favorite I think it’s the most befitting song for this album.

I see fortnight as an analogy for two people who had a brief romance that felt like it would be forever in that moment but they separate and ended up in relationships with other people. They’d see each other here and there over the years and have small talk and then life brought them back into the same neighborhood (or in this case… recording studio/friend group) but they’re still in their relationships so they’re just good neighbors (good friends). She’s jealous of his partner, who is a good person (watering flowers I think means pouring into others, being responsible) but because she’s jealous she wants to “kill her” and her partner is cheating (but likely more just emotionally distant or giving others attention but not her) and so she’s unhappy with him.

I'm sorry to tell you Ajayii but Florida!!! it wouldn't exist if it weren't for Florence Whelch. The instrumental in the chorus with the epic drums is a classic Florence thing. Besides, Taylor doesn't have that strong prominent vocals to emanate the emotion in "FLORIDA!!!" that's why she needed Florence in the song. Taylor vocals are soft and contrast so well with the strong voice of Florence.

Yes dear, I understand that. I'm saying that in 2014/15 they were just friends because at that time Taylor was not romantically involved with him. This is what I wanted to tell you, because in 2014/15 it wouldn't be good for Taylor's image to have a relationship with someone like Matty Healy, as he has a strong history with drugs so much so that he chose drugs above her and that wouldn't do any good. for the "good girl" image she was selling in 2014/15. But that didn't stop them from being friends and admiring each other's work. But, of course there was that "unspoken" interest between them.
