My old Roku box had a setting where captions would only turn on if you hit the replay button. It was perfect for this, but no other "smart" TV brand has it and Roku still hasn't released a fix for their motion smoothing "update" from two years ago that makes everything look worse. So now I have to rewind, pause, turn on captions, watch the scene, pause, turn off captions, and unpause just to figure out what that one side character mumbled.

I always have the subtitles on because sometimes you can't fully make out what some characters say in some shows, unless you watch survivor then the damn subtitles will block the whisper subtitles that the show puts up themselves then it's pause, turn them off and rewind.., only time it's EVER an issue is any show inserted subs.

My bf is deaf in one ear and has dyslexia, making him both desperately in need subtitles and mentally exhausted by reading them. At least I'm a good sub for him
