Sorry I have to be a biology/wildlife nerd here 😅 Another reason that Eagles are endangered is DDT. The insecticide became very popular in the 1900s and wasn’t banned until 1972. It made their eggshells weaker, and the chicks wouldn’t survive to hatching. I hadn’t ever heard of the lead bullet issue. That’s so sad. For those curious, lead bullets were banned in 1991.

My hometown in illinois is very very small, and we started out as a coal mining town. That end where you talked about how the coal industry and how hard it was and how the factory boom and subsequent retreat of that industry really left a hole in my area and the rust belt in general. The poverty in my community is rampant, and I dont really think it's gonna go anywhere but down.

I just joined today and this was the first thing I listened to. What a wonderful introduction! The first live performance I ever saw was Steve Goodman when I was @8 or so, and my favorite song of all time is Angel From Montgomery as performed by John Denver. I know the entire discographies of both of them, and Jimmy Buffet too. Lastly, I just want to recommend a book series my parents owned and I grew up reading if you love Appalachia; it's called The Foxfire Series. It's actually the product of a special University class that went out and interviewed Appalachians, some of them very old with very old ways. The also documented various Appalachian crafts, methods of building, methods of cooking, and so on.
